ECHO (Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations) is a federally funded partnership of six cultural institutions in Hawai'i, Alaska, Mississippi and Massachusetts linking Native and non-Native communities, and re-connecting Native people with collections of Native American art, objects and history. Since 2001 ECHO has created Web sites to accomplish this purpose, drawing on vast collections of data, media, and objects. The partnership is presently re-designing its main Web presence to represent its values and accomplishments, house its resources for cross-cultural and place-based education, and provide a suite of tools for communities, both Native and non-Native, to create and disseminate their own lesson plans, video, text, and photographic content. The conceptual foundations and process of designing the site are examined, and some of the challenges involved in working across a broad range of communities are addressed.
