How to Make Your CV ATS-Friendly and Stand Out In today’s competitive job market, getting your CV past the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is crucial. Many companies use ATS software to filter and rank resumes before they even reach a human recruiter. If your CV isn’t optimized for ATS, it may never get the attention it deserves. Here’s how to ensure your CV is ATS-friendly while maintaining its appeal to hiring managers. 1. Use a Simple, Readable Format ATS software struggles with complex layouts, graphics, and unconventional formatting. To improve readability: Use a clean, professional layout with clear headings. Stick to standard fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman. Avoid tables, text boxes, columns, and images. Use bold and bullet points sparingly for emphasis. 2. Optimize for Keywords ATS software scans your CV for relevant keywords from the job description. To boost your chances: Analyze the job posting and include industry-specific keywords. Incorporate skills, job titles, and qualifications mentioned in the listing. Use variations of important terms (e.g., "Project Management" and "Project Manager"). Avoid keyword stuffing; make sure they fit naturally in your content. 3. Use Standard Headings ATS systems recognize standard section titles better than creative alternatives. Stick to: Summary (instead of "Career Story") Work Experience (instead of "Professional Journey") Education Skills Certifications 4. Save Your CV in the Right Format While PDFs are widely accepted, some ATS systems struggle with them. Unless stated otherwise: Submit your CV in a Word document (.doc or .docx). Ensure correct formatting in plain text to avoid errors in parsing. 5. Avoid Headers, Footers, and Fancy Symbols Many ATS systems have difficulty reading information placed in headers and footers. Also: Use standard bullet points (•) instead of special characters. Avoid decorative elements like emojis or unusual symbols. 6. Focus on Measurable Achievements Rather than listing job duties, highlight quantifiable achievements to make your CV stand out. Example: "Increased sales by 30% within six months by implementing a new marketing strategy." Use numbers, percentages, and concrete outcomes where possible. 7. Include Contact Information Clearly Make sure your name, phone number, email address, and LinkedIn profile are easy to find at the top of your CV. Avoid placing contact details in images or header/footer sections. 8. Proofread for Errors Even a small typo can affect ATS readability. Before submitting your CV: Run a spell check and grammar review. Test your CV through an ATS scanner (some free tools are available online). Ask a friend or mentor to review it.
