The latest issue of Wanderlust is out now, and it signals both a milestone and a new direction for the year ahead. For the first time in our 30+-year history, our cover is not a photograph. We chose instead Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa, reflecting both our in-depth focus on Japan in this issue and the launch of our editorial theme for 2026: the ‘Year of Culture’. Japan, a multi-award winner at our Wanderlust Reader Awards, forms the heart of this special edition, with more than 120 pages dedicated to the country. Coverage ranges from iconic sights to lesser-known regions, alongside features on national parks, izakayas, ryokan stays and the practicalities of planning a trip across the archipelago. Beyond Japan, this issue also includes our annual Good To Go List, spotlighting destinations selected not just for their beauty, but for their relevance right now. Major travelogues on AlUla and Nepal round out the issue, exploring how history and living culture continue to shape meaningful travel experiences.

The December/January issue of Wanderlust is here, and in this edition, we’re revealing our Origin List 2026. The only list of its kind that celebrates Indigenous-led travel, we’re shining a spotlight on the journeys that connect us not only with breathtaking landscapes, but also with the people, cultures and stories that have shaped them. In what is our 33rd anniversary issue, we're also introducing our new tagline – ‘Authentic, meaningful, responsible travel since 1993’. Far from just a rebrand, this is a clearer, bolder way of expressing what Wanderlust has always believed in when it comes to travel. Why the change? Because travel has changed. Today, travellers are asking deeper questions. They’re not just pondering where to go; they’re asking: ‘What kind of traveller do I want to be?’ In an age of overtourism, climate crisis and cultural commodification, going off the beaten path isn’t enough. What matters is how we travel, why we travel and the impact we make. 🔍 Other major stories include: *Wanderlust Editor-in-Chief George Kipouros shares why embracing local life is the key to Santorini’s future *Wanderlust Founding Editor Lyn Hughes explores the Gibb River Road, which is Australia’s wild west in a nutshell *Wanderlust North America Editor Jacqui Agate traces the legacy of the blues across Mississippi *Visions 2025 winner John Seager returns from his photography assignment in Türkiye Plus, we’re sharing Italy’s natural wonders, ranging from Europe’s highest active volcano to the last refuge of the Marsican bear #WanderlustMag #NewIssue #TravelInspiration #AdventureAwaits

Amid a packed and energising week at World Travel Market (WTM) London, Wanderlust hosted the spectacular 24th edition of our Reader Travel Awards in partnership with Experience Oman. The event is the evening highlight of WTM each year, and last night was no exception! Broadcaster, author and adventurer Simon Reeve took to the stage at London’s National Gallery to reveal the winners across 22 categories, joined by world-renowned historian Bettany Hughes, and legendary travel writer Simon Calder. More than 208,000 devoted readers cast a record-breaking 4.8 million votes: this year’s winners included Japan, Italy, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, Alberta, Normandy, Germany, The Galapagos, Ireland and Albania, among many others; tour operators winning including Audley Travel, Exodus Adventure Travels | B Corp™, Abercrombie & Kent UK, Trailfinders and Explore Worldwide | B Corp™. We also presented a special award to Dubrovnik for its impressive efforts to reshape its tourism story and manage visitor numbers responsibly. The unforgettable evening brought together hundreds of travel industry leaders to celebrate and champion the very best in global travel. Guests savoured Omani delicacies including lamb mishkak, chicken majboos and halwa infused with Omani coffee, and many took a virtual journey to Oman through our MetaTravel 360 VR experience. All enjoyed rare after-hours access to the National Gallery’s iconic collections: it is not every day you can stand in front of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers with no crowds, no noise and no rush! A heartfelt thank you to our partners: Experience Oman, Oman Air, MMGY Global, ITB Berlin, True Traveller and TTG Media. Your support made this incredible night possible. We had a pretty memorable day in the office: Bettany Hughes dropped by and proceeded to sign what felt like a mountain of her chart-topping The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Those books will soon be in the hands of guests at our Annual Reader Awards next Wednesday! With more than 200,000 travellers voting and over 4.8 million votes cast, the anticipation is real. Which destinations and travel brands have won our readers’ hearts this year? We can’t wait to share the results, in a ceremony hosted by none other than the great Simon Reeve. And because big weeks come in pairs, next Wednesday you will also find us on the main stage at World Travel Market (WTM) London. Bettany will be joining our Editor in Chief, George Kipouros, for a lively conversation about why culture and heritage are not just the past of travel, but its future. If you’re heading to WTM, come say hello; we’ll be on the Main Boulevard with an immersive stand, our passionate-about-travel team, and plenty to talk about. Let’s shape what travel looks like in 2026 and beyond!
