The calculator only needs a piece of text for which you want to calculate the reading time, and that’s it. It then shows you how much time you have to allocate to finish a report or an article.

What This Reading Time Calculator Does

  • Counts Words
The tool looks at your text and counts all the words in it. It also counts spaces between words to know how many words there are in total.
  • Sets a Speed
It then assumes an average reading speed, like 250 words per minute. This is an average reading speed that most people read with. You can change this speed if you read faster or slower than average.
  • Shows Minutes
The tool divides the total number of words by the reading speed you set. It then rounds the result to give you an estimate of how many minutes it will take to finish reading the text.

So, in short, it helps you know how much time you need to read something based on the chosen speed.

How to Calculate Reading Time?

It’s best to use our reading time calculator for instant and accurate estimates. But if you want to calculate it manually, then keep reading!

Formula

Here is the formula you can use to calculate the reading time for any text.

  • Reading Time = Total Word Count / Reading Speed (words per minute)

Steps:

  1. Total Word Count: Count the total number of words in the book.

  2. Reading Speed: Use an average reading speed (usually between 200-300 words per minute for most people). We will use 250 wpm as an average reading speed.

  3. Calculate: Divide the total word count by your reading speed to get the reading time in minutes.

Example

If a book has 60,000 words and you read at 250 words per minute, use the above formula and put the values:

  • Reading Time = 60,000 words / 250 words per minute
  • Reading Time = 240 minutes or 4 hours

Tips to Improve Your Reading Speed

  • Avoid reading word by word. See phrases at once.
  • Try not to “say” every word in your head.
  • Try to use a pen or your finger to help your eyes follow the text.
  • Practice daily and track progress with our reading speed calculator every week.

People Also Ask!

How long is 300 words?

It depends. If your reading speed is 200 wpm, then 300 words will take 1.5 minutes, and if your speed is 250 wpm, you can finish in about 1.2 minutes.

What if I read slower?

You can set the tool’s pace to your own words-per-minute rate. This reading time calculator lets you add your own word per minute rate. You can also follow the tips mentioned above to increase your reading speed (words per minute).

Does reading speed change by topic?

Yes! You read familiar topics faster than topics that you’re not familiar with. This is because you have to spend more time on new ideas.
