My family loves toy advent calendars—maybe a little too much—but I admit that sometimes I despair at getting 24 little thingies that I have to find a place for.
For those who love the idea of getting a little treat every day—but don't want the clutter accumulation that comes with a trinket advent calendar—the Disney Storybook Collection Advent Calendar is the perfect compromise.
With this one, each day, families get a new little booklet with a different short story inside. The tales, which are designed to be read in five minutes, feature their favorite Disney and Pixar characters, like Judy Hopps from Zootopia, the princesses, or the Toy Story crew. There are 24 stories geared for readers ages 4 and up, though there's another one—24 Days of Disney—that's better for kids ages 6 and older. That one has a different format though, and instead of getting mini books, readers have to tear the story out each day.
What I love about these is that they actually give families something to do once they've opened the calendar and peeked at what's inside. The stories in the advent calendars are perfect for reading before bedtime, so it's a nice little ritual to open the doors, marvel at who's in the new book, and read together as the kids get ready for bed.
The catch—and there's always a catch—is that these have been known to sell out very quickly. It's almost time to start opening those advent calendars anyway, so families who have their eyes on this one shouldn't hesitate.
In the past, the Storybook Collection advent calendars have focused on different characters, and sometimes it's possible to get an old one. Last year was a Stitch advent calendar, so families who love the good ol' Experiment 626 can try to find an old copy and get 100% Stitch stories. (A few copies remain on Amazon.) Last year, there was also one for Spidey and His Amazing Friends, which also has a few lingering on Amazon.
This year, I like that they went back to the old format of having a hodgepodge of characters from across the Disney and Pixar spectrum. Part of the appeal to me is that you don't know which character you're going to get until you open the door. Then again, I'm not a Stitch or Spider-Man superfan, so mileage may vary for some kids. No matter who's in those mini books, the cozy feeling of reading together is the real gift.
