Roulette Bets: Table Zones, Wheel Sections, and Custom Patterns

A roulette table can look crowded at first, but the layout becomes easier once you understand where each bet belongs. Some wagers are placed directly on the numbered grid, while others sit around it. A few bets do not rely mainly on the table at all, because they follow sections of the roulette wheel.

Detailed betting guides

Inside and Outside Bets on the Layout

Most roulette table bets fall into two groups. Inside bets are placed on the numbered part of the layout, covering numbers from 0 or 00 to 36, depending on the roulette version. These wagers can focus on one exact number, known as a straight-up bet, or they can cover small combinations of 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 numbers.

Outside bets sit around the main number grid. They cover larger groups, such as colours, dozens, columns, odd or even, and high or low numbers. Because outside bets cover more numbers, they usually win more often than inside bets, but the payout is lower.

Inside and Outside Bets on the Layout

The main thing to remember is that every bet type covers a different number group. That number coverage affects both the risk and the payout. A straight-up bet pays more because it covers only one result. A broader outside bet pays less because it covers many possible results.

Bet Type Numbers Covered Payout Probabilities (0) Probabilities (00)
Straight up Inside 1 35:1 2.7% 2.6%
Split Inside 2 17:1 5.4% 5.3%
Street Inside 3 11:1 8.1% 7.9%
Corner Inside 4 8:1 10.8% 10.5%
Basket Inside 5 6:1 - 13.15%
Six Line Inside 6 5:1 16.2% 15.8%
Column Outside 12 2:1 32.4% 31.6%
Dozen Outside 12 2:1 32.4% 31.6%
Even/Odd Outside 18 1:1 48.6% 47.4%

Zero can also be joined with other numbers in special combinations. On some layouts, players may see bets such as 0-1-2, 00-2-3, or a four-number option like 0-1-2-3.

Announced Bets and the Racetrack

Some roulette wagers are based on the wheel order, not the table grid. These are known as announced bets or French bets. They cover fixed sections of the roulette wheel and are usually placed through the racetrack area above the main layout.

The key announced bets are:

  • Orphelins
  • Jeu 0
  • Tiers du Cylindre
  • Voisins du Zero

Voisins du Zero

Each of these bets covers a different wheel sector. The number of chips needed depends on how many number combinations are included in that section.

Neighbour bets also use the wheel order. The player chooses one number and then adds numbers beside it on the wheel. This can usually cover between 2 and 9 numbers.

For example, if a player selects 9 with 2 neighbours, the bet covers 14, 31, 9, 22, and 18. In practice, this works as five straight-up bets placed together.

Custom Roulette Wagers

Some roulette bets are not printed as standard table areas, but players still use them often. They are based on patterns, endings, or paired numbers.

Snake Bet

The snake bet gets its name from the shape it makes across the table. It covers 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. The pattern looks like a snake moving through the number grid.

Finals en Plein

Finals en plein focuses on the last digit of roulette numbers. A player chooses one digit from 0 to 9, then covers all numbers ending in that digit. Choosing 9 means betting on 9, 19, and 29. Choosing 2 means covering 2, 12, 22, and 32.

Finals Splits or Finals à Cheval

Finals splits use two ending digits and turn them into split bets. If a player chooses Final Splits 3/7, the covered pairs are 3-7, 13-17, and 23-27. There are 20 possible combinations of this bet.

FAQs

Which roulette wagers give players the best chance?

Outside bets are usually considered safer because they cover more numbers. Even-money bets give close to a 50% chance of winning. The exact percentage changes by roulette version, and double-zero roulette gives slightly weaker odds than single-zero roulette.

What are the highest-risk roulette bets?

Straight-up bets carry the most risk because they cover only one number. They have a 2.70% chance in European Roulette and 2.60% in American Roulette. Split bets are also risky, but they offer a 17:1 payout.

Do roulette tables have limits?

Yes, roulette tables have limits. There is usually one general table limit, and some wager types may also have their own minimums or maximums. Inside and outside bets may not share the same maximum stake.

Can a roulette strategy beat the game?

No strategy can truly beat roulette. Systems such as Martingale and Fibonacci can help players organise bet sizes, but they cannot change the odds or remove the house edge.

Can roulette results be manipulated?

Roulette is not rigged when played at a trusted casino. The game is based on probability. The house edge gives the casino a long-term advantage, but that is different from manipulation.
