Sticky vs Rotating Proxies: Session Types Explained and When to Use Each

Comparison guide · Last reviewed 28 September 2026 · 11 min read

Sticky vs rotating proxies is not a choice between two products but between two ways of using the same proxy pool. A sticky session keeps one exit IP for a series of requests; a rotating session hands you a new IP for every request or on a timer. Choosing the wrong one is behind many failed scraping runs and many flagged accounts: rotate in the middle of a login and the site sees a user teleporting between cities, stay sticky on a large crawl and one IP carries the load of thousands. This guide explains how each session type works, when to use which, and how to set them up with ProxyEmpire, with code.

The short version

Use sticky sessions when a sequence of requests must come from one visitor, and rotating sessions when every request is independent. Logins, baskets, forms and account work need sticky IPs; crawls, price checks and search results work best with rotation. With ProxyEmpire you choose Same IP, Every request or a Custom TTL of up to two hours in the Proxy Manager, and a sticky IP has no fixed time limit.

Intro. Every proxy request leaves from an IP address, but how long you keep that address changes everything. Rotating, sticky and static are three different answers. In the next few minutes you'll learn what each one means, how to set them up, and which one fits which job.

What is a rotating proxy? A rotating proxy gives you a new exit IP for every new connection, picked automatically from a pool. A crawl of ten thousand pages leaves from thousands of different addresses, without any code on your side. Each request looks like it comes from a different visitor, which is what you want when every request stands on its own: crawling public pages, price checks and search results.

What is a sticky session? A sticky session keeps the same exit IP for a series of requests. Every request with the same session ID leaves from the same address, so the website sees one consistent visitor across several steps, like a cart, a checkout or a multi-page form. At ProxyEmpire, a sticky session has no fixed time limit: the IP stays until you rotate it, or until the device behind it goes offline.

Timed rotation: the middle ground. Timed rotation sits in between. The IP holds for a period you set, up to two hours, and then changes automatically. It suits short tasks that need some continuity, like paging through search results, where pages one to ten should come from the same place.

What is a static proxy? A static proxy isn't a session type at all. It's a separate product: one dedicated IP that you rent and keep for the whole subscription, hosted on a server. At ProxyEmpire these are ISP proxies, also called static residential. Sticky is a temporary hold on an IP from a shared pool; static is an IP that's yours. If you need the same address next week, for example to stay on an allowlist, you need static.

How to set them up. With ProxyEmpire, you choose the session type in the Proxy Manager: Same IP, Every request, or Custom TTL. Your choice goes into the proxy username, so you can run sticky and rotating sessions side by side from one account. Sticky and rotating sessions are included on rotating residential, mobile and datacenter plans, at no extra charge. One tip: browsers and HTTP clients reuse connections, so if you need a guaranteed new IP for every page, open a new connection between requests.

Which one should you use? Match the session to the task. Rotate for crawling public pages, SEO rank tracking, and price and stock monitoring, where every request is independent. Use timed rotation for paging through results and other short multi-step jobs. Stay sticky for carts, checkouts and forms, where the site expects one visitor from start to finish. And choose static ISP proxies when you need the same IP for weeks.

Two common mistakes. Two mistakes cause most failed runs. Rotating in the middle of a multi-step flow, so the site sees one visitor jumping between cities. And staying sticky on a large crawl, so one IP carries the load of thousands. Pick the session type per task, not per project.

Try it yourself. ProxyEmpire's $1.97 trial includes 100 megabytes of residential and 50 megabytes of mobile data, and it doesn't expire, so you can try all three session settings yourself. The links are in the description. Thanks for watching.

What Is a Sticky Proxy?

One IP for a whole visit

A sticky proxy session pins your connection to one exit IP from the pool. Every request that uses the same session identifier leaves from the same address, so the website sees one consistent visitor: the same IP when you open the login page, submit the password, add an item to the basket and check out. That consistency is what most websites expect from a real user, and many of them tie cookies, security checks or basket contents to the IP that started the session.

On a residential or mobile network, “sticky” has a natural limit that is worth understanding. The IP belongs to a real device, so it stays available while that device is online and keeps its address. At ProxyEmpire the default is exactly this “natural rotation”: a sticky session has no fixed time limit, and the IP stays until you rotate it or the device behind it goes offline or changes IP. If you need an exact lifetime instead, set a Custom TTL, described below.

Sticky is not the same as static. A static or ISP proxy is an IP you rent and keep for a month, hosted on a server; a sticky session is a temporary hold on an IP from a shared pool. If you need the same address next week, for example to stay on an allowlist, that is a job for ISP (static residential) proxies; our guide to ISP vs residential proxies explains the difference.

What Is a Rotating Proxy?

A fresh IP whenever you need one

A rotating proxy session gives you a different exit IP automatically. In per-request rotation, each new connection through the gateway leaves from a new address picked from the pool, so a crawl of 10,000 pages is spread over thousands of IPs without any code on your side. In timed rotation, the IP holds for a set period and then changes, a middle ground for jobs that need short bursts of continuity.

Rotation is what makes large jobs possible. Websites limit how many requests one IP may make, and they often show a CAPTCHA or an error once a single address goes over. Spread the same volume over a pool of more than 30 million residential IPs and each address makes only a handful of requests, which looks like normal traffic from many different people. Combined with location targeting by country, region, city, ZIP, ISP or ASN, it also lets you see a site the way users in each place see it.

Browsers and HTTP clients reuse connections to the proxy for speed, which affects rotation. A client that keeps one connection open may send several requests over it; if you need a guaranteed new IP for every page, close the connection or open a new session between requests. The setup section shows how.

Four Proxy Session Types Explained

From every request to the same IP all month
Session typeHow the IP behavesTypical use
Per-request rotationNew IP for each new connectionLarge crawls, search results, price checks
Timed rotation (Custom TTL)Same IP for a set time, up to 2 hours, then a new oneShort multi-step tasks, paging through results
Sticky (Same IP)Same IP until you rotate or the device goes offlineLogins, carts, forms, social and seller accounts
Static (ISP)One dedicated IP for the rental periodLong-term identities and allowlists

The first three are settings on the same rotating plan, and you can switch between them per connection; the fourth is a separate product. Mobile proxies follow the same model: sticky, rotating and Custom TTL sessions all work on 4G and 5G carrier IPs.

Key takeaways

  • Sticky sessions keep one IP for a sequence of requests; rotating sessions change it per request or on a timer.
  • Use sticky for anything with state (logins, carts, forms) and rotating for independent requests.
  • ProxyEmpire offers Same IP, Every request and Custom TTL (up to 2 hours) at no extra charge.
  • A sticky IP has no fixed time limit; it stays until you rotate it or the device goes offline.

Sticky or Rotating Proxies: Which to Use for Your Job

Match the session to the task
TaskSessionWhy
Crawling a site’s public pagesRotatingSpreads requests; no page depends on the last
SEO rank trackingRotatingEach query is independent and location-specific
Price and stock monitoringRotatingHigh volume across many products and cities
Ad verificationRotating or short TTLMany viewpoints; a few pages each
Paging through search resultsCustom TTLConsistent results across pages 1 to 10
Logging in to your own accountsStickySites link the session to the IP that logged in
Checkout and form testingStickyBasket and form state must survive each step
Social media and seller account managementSticky, one session per accountEach account keeps its own consistent IP

A good rule: if losing the IP halfway through would break the task or look suspicious, use sticky. If every request would succeed just as well from a stranger, use rotating. For account work in anti-detect browsers, give each browser profile its own sticky session so every account keeps one identity. For scraping, our Python web scraping guide shows rotation with requests, httpx and Scrapy.

How to Set Up Sticky and Rotating Sessions with ProxyEmpire

Dashboard, code and API

In the dashboard, open Proxy Manager and then Connection Builder. Choose Residential or Mobile, pick the location, and set IP rotation to one of three options:

  • Same IP for a sticky session with natural rotation.
  • Every request for per-request rotation.
  • Custom TTL to hold each IP for a fixed time, up to two hours.

Copy the full proxy string. The host is v2.proxyempire.io and the port is 5000; the rotation and location choices are encoded in the username, and a sticky string contains a session ID. Change that ID and you get a new sticky IP; keep it and you keep the IP. The Rotate session button swaps the IP behind an existing sticky session on demand, and the Proxy list panel generates many sticky strings at once, one per account or worker.

Python · rotating vs sticky with requests
import requests

HOST = "v2.proxyempire.io:5000"
ROTATING = f"http://ROTATING_USERNAME:PASSWORD@{HOST}" # IP rotation: Every request
STICKY = f"http://STICKY_USERNAME:PASSWORD@{HOST}" # IP rotation: Same IP

def ip(proxy):
    # A fresh Session per call closes the connection, so rotation applies
    with requests.Session() as s:
        s.proxies = {"http": proxy, "https": proxy}
        return s.get("https://api.ipify.org", timeout=30).text

print("rotating:", [ip(ROTATING) for _ in range(3)])   # three different IPs
print("sticky:  ", [ip(STICKY) for _ in range(3)])     # the same IP three times

For one sticky identity per account, generate a list of sticky strings and store one with each account’s settings. For rotating jobs, point every worker at the same rotating string; there is no limit on concurrent sessions, so you can run as many workers in parallel as your machine allows. If you manage proxies programmatically, the ProxyEmpire API can generate proxy lists, rotate sessions and check usage; see the API documentation.

Common Sticky and Rotating Proxy Mistakes

And how to avoid them
  • Rotating in the middle of a login. The site sees the password arrive from a different IP than the login page and asks for verification or logs you out. Use sticky for the whole flow.
  • Sharing one sticky session between many accounts. Several accounts on one IP look linked. Give each account its own session ID.
  • Running a big crawl on one sticky IP. One address sending thousands of requests is the pattern rate limits exist to stop. Rotate, or spread the crawl across many sticky sessions.
  • Expecting a new IP on every request from a browser. Browsers keep connections open. Use a new session, or a new browser context, when you need a new identity.
  • Treating a sticky IP as permanent. A residential device can go offline. Build your code to accept a new IP gracefully, and use ISP proxies when the address itself must never change.

Whatever the session type, the rest of your behaviour still counts: realistic pacing, consistent browser fingerprints for account work and respect for each site’s terms. ProxyEmpire’s support team is available 24/7, staffed by real people, if you are unsure which setting fits your project.

ProxyEmpire proxies are for lawful use. Some site categories, such as banking, payment and government websites, are blocked by default on all products.

Sticky vs Rotating Proxies FAQ

Straight answers
What is the difference between sticky and rotating proxies?

A sticky session keeps the same exit IP for a series of requests; a rotating session gives a new IP for each request or after a set time. Both use the same proxy pool.

How long does a sticky session last?

At ProxyEmpire there is no fixed time limit. The IP stays until you rotate it or the device behind it goes offline or changes IP. For an exact lifetime, set a Custom TTL of up to two hours.

Are sticky proxies the same as static proxies?

No. A sticky session holds an IP from a shared pool for a while; a static (ISP) proxy is a dedicated IP you keep for the rental period.

Which is better for web scraping?

Rotating, for most crawls, because it spreads requests across many IPs. Use sticky or a short TTL only where a sequence of pages must come from one visitor.

Which is better for managing accounts?

Sticky, with one session per account, so each account always appears from its own consistent IP.

Do sticky sessions cost more?

No. Sticky and rotating sessions are included on residential, mobile and datacenter plans at no extra charge, and Custom TTL is included on residential and mobile.

How do I force a new IP in a sticky session?

Change the session ID in the username, press Rotate session in the Proxy Manager, or rotate it through the API.
