In Service of the Common Good

It might be hard to see–with political attacks in high gear this election season–but there is something hopeful taking root. People with a moral foundation are running for public office and they’re driven by an ethic of service. These individuals are able to put service above self, says Rye Barcott, author of Courage Can Save US. “Courage is the conscious acceptance of risk in service of the common good, whether that’s your family, faith, community, or country but it cannot be yourself,” he says. Barcott, who co-founded With Honor, sits down with other nonprofit leaders working to put people of character into public life. Emma Bloomberg leads Murmuration and Mike Buman is the executive director of Lee. Their conversation is led by David Brooks, former New York Times columnist and staff writer for The Atlantic. Watch the video of their conversation at the Aspen Ideas Festival.

    Rebranding sleep apnoea

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition where a person’s breathing stops and starts repeatedly while they sleep, possibly over 30 times an hour, leaving them exhausted on waking. It affects millions around the world and can lead to serious health problems if left untreated. Patients are often given a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) breathing device to keep air flowing into their lungs through the night. But the mask that covers the face can look and feel a bit strange. And there is stigma too because although anyone can be affected by sleep apnoea, this is not the public perception. Enter, the ‘CPAP Baddies’, an informal online community who are on a social media mission to fight misconceptions around the condition and re-brand life with a CPAP machine.

Unlikely: A love across the political divide

Catalina and Jorge were born on the same day - 14 June. They also share a surname and, at one point, attended neighbouring schools. But that is where the similarities end. They hold radically different political views in a country that has endured Latin America's longest running and most violent internal conflict. Catalina, 36, was born in Bogotá. She is a right-wing influencer and a staunch admirer of former Colombian president Álvaro Uribe. Jorge, 42, was born in a guerrilla camp. He is the son of Mono Jojoy, one of the FARC's most senior commanders, and spent 16 years fighting in the jungle.Their paths crossed at a karaoke party. What follows is an unlikely love story across a deep political divide.

  • She Got Divorced… Then Used the Pain to Build Her Dream Life

She Got Divorced… Then Used the Pain to Build Her Dream Life

She dreamed of marriage as a child. It was her escape. Years later, she walked out, rebuilt herself from the ground up, and turned her pain into power. In this raw, deeply vulnerable episode of Unbroken Podcast, host Richard Akita sits down with Natalie Anang, studio executive, wellness enthusiast, and Bible study facilitator, for a conversation that will challenge everything you think you know about healing after heartbreak, the energy of trauma, and what it really takes to rebuild your life when your dream falls apart. Natalie opens up about the childhood fantasy that led her into the wrong marriage, the moment she looked in the mirror and didn't recognize herself anymore, the day she received her divorce judgment and it hit harder than she expected, and how she lost memory of the trauma as her brain tried to protect her. She also reveals the three things she negotiated with God while in pain, the factory and SUV that came to pass, and why she believes divorce or trauma has an energy you can either waste in bed or channel into building the life you've always wanted. This isn't just a story about surviving divorce. It's a masterclass in making pain pay, redefining marriage from fantasy to purpose, and choosing to fix the girl before the marriage, not just the one after. If you're healing from heartbreak, rebuilding after loss, or wondering whether it's possible to dream again after everything falls apart, this conversation will give you the roadmap you didn't know you needed. This week on Oversharers… 🤭 We’re catching you up on life lately, creating content and trying to fit our ambitions into already hectic schedules. Because honestly, how are we meant to do everything?! 😭 We also dive into two Substack reads that got us reflecting on our faith-from Surah Al-Baqarah to the “invisible string” idea. Why do some people feel familiar from the moment you meet them? What can our experiences of love teach us about ourselves? And how do we learn to trust Allah’s plan when we can’t see what’s coming next? 🤍 We’ve decided to skip the scenarios this week and give this conversation the space it deserves. Just us, an honest catch-up and the reflections we couldn’t keep to ourselves. Get comfy, girlies there’s plenty to unpack. 🫶🏾✨ Substack links - Read the articles along with us: 📖 Surah Baqarah — Righteous Writings (https://righteouswritings.substack.com/p/surah-baqarah-experiencing-an-effect) 🧵 The Invisible String Theory, Explained According to Islam — Maham Nourishes (https://mahamnourishes.substack.com/p/the-invisible-string-theory-explained) Hosted on Acast.
