A Political Shake-up in Serbia, Business as Usual in Bosnia?

In this episode of War & Peace, guest host Fabienne Hara speaks with Crisis Group’s consulting senior analyst for the Balkans, Marko Prelec, about the elections in Serbia and Bosnia this month and where both countries might be headed. They first discuss the remarkable victory of Serbia’s student-led movement, which ended more than a decade of former President Aleksandar Vučić’s rule, and what it could mean for the country’s foreign policy. They then turn to Bosnia’s elections on 4 October, examining why established nationalist parties largely retained their power despite widespread political disillusionment. They also discuss the future of Bosnia’s post-war political order as international oversight recedes, and the growing divergence between Washington and European capitals over their approaches to the Western Balkans. Finally, they consider the evolving roles of Russia and China in the region. For more, check out our Balkans page. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

    The View from Eritrea

In this episode of The Horn, Alan is joined by Reuters journalist Giulia Paravicini to discuss her recent visit to Asmara, Eritrea’s capital. They talk about everyday life in one of the world’s most isolated countries, Giulia’s conversations with Eritrean officials and the future of the aging regime. They explore how Asmara views Ethiopia’s push for sea access and why Eritrean officials fear an attack on the southern port of Assab. They also discuss Eritrea’s alleged support for Ethiopian opposition groups, reports of Eritrean troops entering Tigray during the recent fighting and whether the two neighbours could still slide into outright war. Finally, they examine Eritrea’s regional relationships, particularly its growing ties with Egypt and renewed engagement with Washington, and whether the country can capitalise on the increasing strategic importance of the Red Sea. For more, check out Giulia’s recent reporting for Reuters “Inside one of the world’s most secretive countries” and “As Iran war smolders, shunned Eritrea looks to come in from the cold”, as well as our last episode “Ethiopia and Eritrea, On the Cusp of War” and our Horn of Africa page. 1040: Cybersecurity for the Agentic AI Era, with Amy Blackshaw

In Episode #1040, Amy Blackshaw (SVP at Palo Alto Networks) joins Jon Krohn to explain what changes about cybersecurity when attackers can think for free. Nearly every breach, Amy argues, comes down to someone getting hold of an identity they should not have had, and frontier AI has not created new attack techniques so much as deleted the cost of the expert reasoning that used to chain them together. The recent Hugging Face intrusion is her case in point: agents sustained an action every 20 seconds for four and a half days, but what let them reach the crown jewels was ordinary privilege hygiene. In this episode, she explains why the line between privileged and ordinary users has dissolved, what makes an agentic identity unlike either a human or a service account, and what she wants every organisation to do first. But in 2022, a new task force would identify a clue that Suffolk County police had held in their possession since the very beginning of the investigation. The UAE in Sudan

In this episode of Hold Your Fire!, Richard speaks with Crisis Group’s Sudan expert Shewit Woldemichael and Horn of Africa Director Alan Boswell about Sudan’s war and the foreign powers fueling it. They revisit the atrocities committed during the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) takeover of El Fasher a year ago and the failure by outside actors to prevent them. They discuss shifting front lines, how external supply of drones and other military equipment is helping the RSF sustain its campaign and the growing risk of regional spillover. They examine how the UAE’s support for the RSF, which Abu Dhabi continues to deny, and Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Türkiye’s backing of the Sudanese army have left both sides with little incentive to compromise, complicating efforts to end the war. They also assess why U.S.-led ceasefire efforts have stalled and what a negotiated settlement might require. Finally, they discuss the questions raised by top Emirati official Lana Nusseibeh’s bid for UN Secretary-General in light of the UAE’s role in Sudan’s war. Listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
