What is zero-knowledge architecture?

Zero-knowledge architecture ensures that only you know what’s stored in your vault. In cryptography, it means proving you know something without revealing what it is. The NordPass password manager is built on zero-knowledge architecture to protect your data, keeping the proof that you have the key but not the encryption key itself.

No one else can see your passwords, credit card details, or notes without your authorization. NordPass also doesn’t store your Master Password, so your encrypted data remains secure even if someone were to breach our servers.

What is zero-knowledge cloud storage?

Our zero-knowledge architecture extends to cloud backup. NordPass encrypts all of your vault data locally, so neither we nor an intruder would know what’s inside when you back it up to our servers. This lets NordPass to easily sync passwords across multiple devices without compromising your security.

How does zero-knowledge architecture work in NordPass?

When you create a NordPass account, you’re asked to set a Master Password. Make sure you remember it because we won’t! All the encryption and decryption take place right on your device. By the time your data reaches our servers for backup and sync, it’s secured from everyone, including us. We know nothing about your vault, which is what zero-knowledge architecture is all about.

The benefits of zero-knowledge architecture

Zero-knowledge architecture reduces what attackers can obtain, even in worst-case scenarios. With zero-knowledge encryption, your vault is encrypted on your device before it’s backed up or synced, so what reaches our servers isn’t readable data – it’s encrypted information.

This also limits the impact of a breach. Attackers can’t decrypt anything without your Master Password, and NordPass doesn’t store it. Without that key, stolen backups remain unusable.

Just as importantly, it protects your privacy by design. Neither NordPass nor any potential intruder can see what’s inside your vault. If a third party asked for your vault contents, we simply wouldn’t be able to provide them.
