Why can a magnet suddenly stop working? How can tiny invisible interactions between particles trigger dramatic changes in the world around us? From matter abruptly switching state to complex systems behaving unexpectedly, these phenomena are everywhere in nature. Yet scientists still do not fully understand the rules behind them. Mathematician Hugo Duminil-Copin wants to uncover these hidden mechanisms. His new ERC-funded project will tackle some of the hardest open questions in physics, by developing new tools to better understand complex systems, from magnets and quantum materials to high-dimensional models. His research at the Université de Genève will combine ideas from probability, physics and analysis to reveal how large-scale behaviour can emerge from countless microscopic interactions. The project could open new ways of understanding complex systems across mathematics and physics. 🧬 Proteins are at the heart of most functions in the human body, yet identifying them remains a major scientific challenge. A team at the University of Geneva (UNIGE) has developed a fast and efficient nanopore-based method to identify proteins one molecule at a time. Published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, this research opens new avenues for understanding diseases, developing new medicines, and discovering novel biomarkers. Lorsque l’apoptose fonctionne mal, les cellules survivent alors qu’elles devraient mourir, ce qui peut provoquer des cancers. A l’inverse, si l’apoptose entraîne une perte trop importante de cellules, cela peut provoquer la dégénérescence des muscles ou du système immunitaire. Les protéines clés de l’apoptose (Bim, Bax, Bcl-xL) fonctionnent comme un système en équilibre. De petites différences d’interactions ou de dynamique suffisent à faire basculer une cellule vers la survie ou la mort. Mais les protéines sont en général étudiées à très basse température pour les figer. Mais dans la cellule, elles interagissent en permanence. Des chercheurs et chercheuses du Département de Chimie Physique de l’Université de Genève et de l’Université de la Ruhr à Bochum ont utilisé une méthode permettant d’étudier ces protéines dans des conditions proches de celles du vivant, notamment à température de la cellule. Cette approche permet ainsi de comprendre comment les protéines de l’apoptose basculent vers un état de mort ou de survie dans leur environnement normal.
