Public Acts

Public Acts are Bills that have been approved by the Legislature, signed into law, filed with the Secretary of State, and assigned a Public Act Number. The versions of Public Acts as they were originally passed are considered Legislative Documents and are available on this page.

Public Acts also become part of the Michigan Compiled Laws. The versions of the Acts in the MCL are the Acts as they exist today and include changes made to them via subsequent legislation. This version is not available for Appropriations Acts, because they are not compiled into the MCL. To search for Public Acts within the MCL, please visit the MCL Public Act page.

When an Initiated Law is adopted by the Legislature, it is also assigned a Public Act Number. Because it did not originate as a Bill, it is not found when searching or browsing Public Acts from this page. Information about these Acts can be found on the Initiatives Page.

Local Acts

Local Acts are Bills that have been approved by the Legislature, signed into law, filed with the Secretary of State, and assigned a Local Act Number. The versions of Local Acts as they were originally passed are considered Legislative Documents and are available on this page. Local Acts are not compiled and do not become a part of the Michigan Compiled Laws.

Generally, a Local Act is an act that applies to a particular locality or a group of particular localities, rather than the entire state. Because section 29 of article IV of the state constitution of 1963 prohibits the passage of a local or special act when a general act can be made applicable, Local Acts are rare today. If a general act cannot be made applicable, a Local Act may be passed by supermajority (2/3) legislative approval and is subject to a referendum by the electorate in the affected area.
