Shawrya Mehrotra shared thisI think there’s an AI tool for practically everything now. From writing emails to making presentations, we’re all trying to figure out how much of our work AI can do for us. At this point, I’m just waiting for a tool that can attend meetings on my behalf. Recently came across something rather interesting. Sarvam, an Indian AI startup, has signed an agreement with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff to develop AI applications for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. We’re talking about potential applications in military training, operational support and decision-making. Having spent the last few years building Metvy and interacting with founders and investors through The VC Fellowship, I feel most conversations around AI still revolve around the same few use cases. AI agents, SaaS products, productivity tools and so on. Nothing wrong with that, but I think there’s a much larger opportunity that we don’t discuss enough. Building AI for defence is a completely different ball game. You can’t exactly launch an MVP, figure out what went wrong and push an update the next morning. The expectations around security, reliability and execution are on a completely different level. Of course, signing an agreement and actually building something that works at this scale are two very different things. Still, I genuinely feel we need more Indian startups attempting to solve such problems rather than building another version of something that already exists. Perhaps some of the most important AI companies to come out of India won’t necessarily be building products that we use every day. Quite keen to see how Sarvam takes this forward.

Shawrya Mehrotra reposted thisApparently, getting funded by Blume Ventures might be easier than getting onto Karthik’s podcast. 😄 That was one of the many memorable moments from our closed-door fireside chat with Karthik B. Reddy in Mumbai on October 24, hosted for the VC Fellowship community. This was my second time hosting Karthik, having previously hosted him virtually for a workshop with our fellows. Bringing him in person to our community was something I had been looking forward to for a long time, and the evening certainly lived up to my expectations. We began with his book, Destiny Avenged, discussing what inspired him to write it, why he chose those eight particular founder stories, and the remarkable journeys of entrepreneurs who built successful businesses despite years of uncertainty, rejection and setbacks. The conversation then moved into the intricacies of venture capital. Why does the power law matter so much to VC funds? Why do investors look for companies capable of becoming billion-dollar businesses? What separates a promising founder from someone an investor is willing to back for the next decade? Having spent over 15 years building Blume Ventures and backing companies like GreyOrange, smallcase, Ultrahuman and Servify, Karthik brought a wealth of experience to these questions. We also discussed the lessons he has learned from founders whose companies took years longer than expected to find their footing. We ended with a rather entertaining rapid-fire round. Some answers were exactly what we expected, while others caught us completely off guard! Our fellows also had the opportunity to ask Karthik their own questions, interact with him personally and get signed copies of his book. On a personal note, this evening meant a great deal to me. Karthik has been one of the most generous supporters of the VC Fellowship, consistently making time for our community, sharing his feedback and encouraging what we’re trying to build. That support, particularly from someone who has played such an important role in India’s venture capital journey, means a lot to us. Thank you, Karthik, for making this evening possible. Shawrya Mehrotra shared thisBuilding Metvy has taught me that running a business comes with responsibilities you don’t necessarily think about when you’re starting out. In the beginning, most of your attention goes towards finding customers, building partnerships and figuring out how to grow. As the business grows, you’re also responsible for protecting everything you’ve built, including the trust people place in you. And sometimes, something as simple as a phishing email can put that at risk. I recently came across an interesting take on this by Tata Tele Business Services. Their #SackTheHack campaign follows three hackers whose usual tricks are no longer working as businesses get better at cybersecurity. Take Arjun Malhotra, for instance. A professional phisher who’s now looking at a rather unexpected career change as a copywriter. It sounds funny, but there’s a fairly serious business lesson here. Cybersecurity shouldn’t become a priority only after something goes wrong. Businesses need to prepare for threats well before they encounter them, something TTBS is helping them do through its cybersecurity solutions. After all, we’ve spent years learning how to build businesses. Protecting them deserves just as much attention. That’s also the idea behind their #SackTheHack campaign film. You could have a great session, get people interested, and see good participation. But what happens after that first interaction? How do you make sure people continue finding value in what you’re building? I think anyone who’s built a business, especially a community-led one, would relate to this. Interestingly, I was thinking about this when I read about Eternal’s recent partnership with SBI Card. Think about how we use these platforms today. You order dinner on Zomato, get your groceries from Blinkit, and perhaps book a movie through District over the weekend. Without consciously thinking about it, you’re already interacting with the same company’s ecosystem multiple times a week. Now, with a credit card offering benefits across these platforms, Eternal is giving people another reason to keep coming back. I find the thinking behind this quite interesting. They’re not necessarily trying to create a completely new habit. They’re building on habits that already exist. Of course, whether the card actually builds loyalty is something only time will tell. People can be surprisingly quick to switch platforms for a better deal. But there’s a larger lesson here for founders. Sometimes we’re so occupied with figuring out how to reach more people that we forget to think about how we can become more useful to the people we’ve already reached. Having built Metvy over the years, I can tell you that the latter deserves just as much attention.

Shawrya Mehrotra reposted thisA decade ago, where you lived could determine who you could learn from, work with, or even build a business with. If you were a student in a smaller city, finding the right mentors or connecting with entrepreneurs often meant travelling to larger cities, attending events, or having the right contacts. Fast forward to today, and things look quite different. When Reliance Jio launched in 2016, it helped make mobile internet significantly more affordable, creating greater opportunities for Indians to participate in the digital ecosystem. Today, Jio serves over 533 million customers, with its network reaching more than 19,000 PIN codes across India. And here's a particularly interesting number: according to Jio's figures, 40% of its new connections come from outside Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. For someone like me, building Metvy, that shift is especially meaningful. I've always believed that the right people can change the direction of your career or business. But first, you need the opportunity to find and connect with them. Today, a college student can interact with industry professionals, an entrepreneur can connect with potential collaborators across cities, and someone with an idea can discover communities that share their interests. Of course, none of this happened because of one company alone. But Jio played an important role in making affordable connectivity more accessible across India. We often discuss Jio's impact through data prices, internet speeds and subscriber numbers. But I think its contribution to expanding the possibilities for networking and entrepreneurship deserves just as much attention. Because opportunity shouldn't depend entirely on your PIN code. Hosting him for an offline meetup was something we had wanted to try for a while, and we finally got the chance. With the launch of his new book, it couldn’t have been a better occasion. Karthik spoke about his experience in the VC ecosystem and how VCs look at opportunities. He shared personal anecdotes, many of which are also covered in his book. And to top it all off, every fellow went home with a signed copy! The one hour flew by. We covered so many different topics, and what stood out was how candid he was throughout the conversation. Same face, same voice, same expressions except you never recorded it. With AI, this isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds anymore. I’ve been creating content on LinkedIn since 2020, and if there’s one thing I’ve understood, it’s that building credibility takes years. People begin to recognise your work, trust your opinions and associate your face with everything you stand for. Now imagine someone recreating that identity in a matter of minutes. We’ve already seen public figures like Raj Shamani and Aman Gupta approach courts over the unauthorised use of their names, images and voices. The bigger concern is that this isn’t limited to celebrities anymore. Founders, creators and professionals who have spent years building their reputations could face the same problem. I genuinely believe AI has made content creation more accessible, but there’s a huge difference between using technology to create content and using it to impersonate someone without their consent. We’ve spent years talking about the importance of building a personal brand. Perhaps it’s time we started talking about protecting one, too. If your face and voice can be recreated without your permission, how much control do you really have over your personal brand?

Recognition is always meaningful, but what made Nashville special was everything around it. The HotTopics team put together a genuinely thoughtful few days. Not the usual conference formula of panels, presentations and business cards, but candid conversations with leaders wrestling with the same questions many of us are facing today: AI, transformation, data, leadership, culture and how to turn all of it into real business impact. Last night’s awards ceremony at the Country Music Hall of Fame was a fitting way to close it. For me, being recognized for a third consecutive year is also a reminder that digital leadership keeps changing. A few years ago the conversation was largely about transformation. Today it is increasingly about AI, operating models, growth and whether technology is actually creating measurable value. That makes the journey much more interesting. Thank you to Philip Randerson, Peter Stojanovic , Doug Drinkwater and the entire HotTopics team for building such a strong global community, and to CloverDX for supporting the Global CDO 100. Most importantly, congratulations to the other leaders recognized this year. I left Nashville with new ideas, new relationships and a longer list of questions than I arrived with. Usually a good sign.
