On #WorldSightDay, I'm reflecting on the profound impact and future-focused strategy of @Standard Chartered India 's #SeeingIsBelieving (SiB) initiative. For 22 years, SiB has been a powerful force in comprehensive eye care across 23 states, demonstrating that investment in health is one of the most cost-effective routes to economic and social prosperity. A study by IABP showed that visual impairment costs India approximately INR 1,158 billion. Crucially, the $31 social return on investment for every $1 invested in eye care underscores its power to drive significant progress. *Scaling Impact* With 275 million people in India visually impaired, including 9 million who are blind, the need is immense. We’re tackling this head-on: • We've expanded our Vision Centres network to 651, including 9 new ones (4 futuristic centres) launching today. • Over 85% of our Vision Centres are self-sustaining, operating like vital community enterprises. • Our partners have screened 1.06 crore patients, dispensed 11.01 lakh spectacles and we are on a clear path to declare 10 districts avoidable blindness free soon. *Empowering the Next Generation of Professionals* SiB's synergy with our #Futuremakers initiative addresses the urgent need for skilled talent while creating opportunities for youth, particularly women. • Our Eye Care Academies are key. We are launching our fifth academy this year in Vrindavan, adding to a network that has provided employment or enhanced careers for 1.26 lakh candidates in ophthalmic roles. • We are relentless in our pursuit of increasing women participation—50% of all Vision Centres are now women-led, and we are working with partners to increase this to 100%. These centres offer compelling, professional career paths for young women from underprivileged communities. *Pioneering Inclusion through Technology* We are committed to making high-quality eye care accessible, even in complex topographies like North-East India and the Sundarbans. • We are integrating technology, increasing our futuristic Vision Centres to 79 this year. • Our unique LVPEI@Home program has been a game-changer for the elderly and those with mobility issues, having served over 21,300 people so far at their doorsteps and profoundly impacting women who face socio-economic barriers to accessing care. SiB's legacy is one of action, not just aspiration. As we celebrate World Sight Day, our focus remains firmly on leveraging technology, building capacity, making all our vision centres managed by women and empowering communities to eradicate avoidable blindness region by region.
