I've spent the last decade at Google, and six years before that running my own mobile app company. Before that, I wrote a lot of code.
Along the way, I noticed that the most important parts of tech leadership rarely make it into a slide deck. Who actually made the decision. Why the launch almost slipped. The hallway comment that quietly changed a roadmap.
That's what I write about: real stories from building things in tech. The launches, the meetings, the wins, the mistakes, and what I took from each one. Some are useful. Some are just funny. The best ones are both.
A few things you'll notice if you stick around:
- I speak fluent Tech, Business, and Human, and translate between them for a living.
- I'd rather own an outcome than help with one.
- I'm obsessed with AI, mostly with using it to be more resourceful, not just busier.

Rony Rozen שיתף את זהYesterday the AI and I had a small disagreement about 150 lines of code. I’ve been writing a lot of code lately, both at work and in school. I hadn’t done this much hands-on coding in a while, and I’m really enjoying it. And like everyone else these days, I do it with AI. So yesterday I needed to add a feature to a tool I’m working on, and I asked the AI how to approach it. It was very confident: “This is a complex feature. But two other features in this exact system already did something similar. Just follow the same pattern.” It sounded reasonable, so I told it to go ahead. A few minutes later, I had 150+ lines of code across 4 different files. I started reviewing, and somewhere in the middle I found an if statement that basically said: “if feature A or feature B, do X.” So I asked: “Wait. Why do we need all this? Can’t we just add my feature to this if statement?” The answer: “That just might work!” It did. I keep hearing that it doesn’t matter anymore whether you’re an engineer or not, because anyone can vibe code something impressive. And honestly? That’s true. But I’d argue there’s still a lot of value in someone looking at 150 lines of code and asking, “wait, why isn’t this just one line?” In the AI’s defense, it was very enthusiastic about my one-liner. P.S. Went looking for a photo of me coding. Found this. I have zero memory of why I was wearing a helmet, but I'd like to think I was preparing for code review.

Others ask it the way you’d ask your dentist whether this is going to hurt. One person asked, very seriously: “Should I be worried?” So, for the record (and for anyone new), here’s how it works: The work stays general. You won’t read about our projects, our roadmap, or what was said behind a closed door. Names stay out. The human moments stay in. The embarrassing ones, only if they’re mine. And to everyone who’s been suspiciously well-behaved around me lately: you can relax. Mostly.

Rony Rozen שיתף את זהTwo minutes into meeting someone for the first time, I asked him for a favor. This week our team got together at the Google Madrid office. We work on AI and creativity, so some of my new colleagues are creative experts, many of whom started out as professional photographers. I’d known James for about two minutes when I asked: “Is it too early in our relationship to ask you for a favor?” Then I explained. I post here twice a week. I’m always short on good photos. Would he be willing to direct and shoot a few? My logic: worst case, he says no. Best case, I get a few weeks’ worth of photos. He said yes. And then he went into full professional mode. He walked me to spots around the office I’d walked past all week without noticing. He talked about lighting, textures, and a bunch of other things I nodded along to without fully understanding. He told me what to do with my hands and where to look. I have never been as aware of my own hands and teeth as I was in those ten minutes. So if you see this shirt again in the next few posts: yes, it’s the same day. Some of you may remember I have a history with this. (Ask anyone who still has me saved as “Red Shirt Rony.”) Thank you, James, for the photos and for saying yes.

Rony Rozen שיתף את זהSome people pick up a hobby. I started a PhD. (Emphasis on "started." Ask me again in a few years.) Last semester, I became a PhD student at Tel Aviv University. Alongside my job at Google. The field: AI. The topic: classified, for now. I'll share more as I make progress... In honor of the new semester kicking off this week, a few notes from semester one: * I spend my days reviewing other people's docs. At night, my advisor reviews mine. Karma is real, and it uses suggestion mode. * Turns out "per my last email" has an academic equivalent: "as shown in prior work." Same energy. * A literature review is basically a design doc, except you can't ping any of the original authors. * Every paper ends with "further research is needed." As a TPM, I'm itching to assign an owner and a due date. And to answer the question I know is coming: sleep is on the roadmap. Not committed for this quarter.

Rony Rozen שיתף את זהYesterday I had my first meeting with my manager's manager's manager. I've been a TPM long enough to know how to prepare for something important. So I ran it like a launch. Dependencies: moved afterschool pickup earlier, so everyone would be home and settled in time. Stakeholder alignment: briefed my 8-year-old. Important meeting, only 30 minutes, please keep your sisters busy, and afterwards I'm all yours until bedtime. Comms plan: told my twins mommy has a short meeting, and they need to play nicely OUTSIDE the door. Risk: husband abroad this week. Single point of failure: me. I joined two minutes early. Quiet. I genuinely thought I pulled it off. He joined. The door opened. Literally the same second. For the next 30 minutes: urgent questions that could not possibly wait, a game of hide-and-seek with the man on the screen from behind my office chair, and one 4-year-old on my lap for the first half of the meeting. Then the other one for the second half. He was incredibly gracious. Asked their names, said hi, told me he has three young boys of his own, and said he completely understood, since it was their time he was borrowing. He also offered, more than once, to move the meeting. (if you're reading this: thanks for that!) Post-mortem: the plan was solid. I just forgot the team executing it was four. I want my kids to see what I do. I truly believe in bringing my whole self to work. I'd just love for my whole self to wait until, say, our third meeting.

Rony Rozen שיתף את זהOn the second night of our offsite, we had dinner at a few long tables. I was sitting at one end with a few people from my team. At the other end of the table, a group of leads from several different teams (all based in different sites) were having a pretty heated conversation. You could tell they were onto something new and exciting. At some point, they called me over to join. 30 minutes later, there were about 10 of us on that side of the table. Everybody sharing their own perspective and expertise, and by the end of dinner, we basically had a new tiger team. The next day, we got everybody in one room for a 3-hour design and brainstorming session, to align and kick things off. By the end of it, we brought in a few more leads to share the idea and get their buy-in. I've seen so many great ideas come up over dinner and never go anywhere. This one had a milestone on calendar before anyone even got on a plane home. Who knows, maybe one day we'll look back at that dinner as the moment something big started…

Rony Rozen שיתף את זהThe last time I boarded a plane for work was November 2021. I didn't want to go. I was still nervous about traveling after COVID, and I had a long list of very reasonable reasons to stay home. My manager listened to each one, and politely ignored all of them. That trip is also when I found out we were having twins. So definitely a memorable one… Today I'm boarding again. New team, a few weeks in, flying to London to spend a few days in a room with another Google team we're collaborating with. Early observations from the gate: - I walked through the terminal at my own pace. It's faster than I remembered. - I watched a toddler at the gate throw a tantrum and felt weirdly homesick. I've worked for years with people I've never met in person, and it works. But a few days in a room get you to the good part faster. You learn how people think out loud, what their "sounds good" actually means, and who to call when something breaks. Every call after that gets easier. So my plan for the next few days: - Have the big conversations in person. Status updates can wait for video. - Have lunch with the people I'll be emailing most for the next year. - Learn how each person says "I disagree." The rest we can do on Meet. Preferably from my desk, with someone asking me for a snack.

Rony Rozen שיתף את זה"How am I supposed to know that if you never taught me?!" That's how my 8-year-old called me out when I told her that's not how you clean it. She was 100% right. I never showקג her. I just assumed she'd pick it up by watching. (Exhibit A: her a few years ago, fully committed to a cleaning technique nobody ever corrected. In my defense, it was adorable.) I've done the exact same thing at work. More than once. Three weeks into a new team, I'm on the other side of it. Everyone has been welcoming, but I've still learned most of the unwritten rules the way I learned this team takes six flights of stairs to lunch: by getting it wrong first. So now I'm counting every "this is how we do it here" I've ever expected someone new to just know. The list is longer than I'd like.

Rony Rozen הגיבו על זהRony Rozen הגיבו על זהIn 2003 I joined as a real-time embedded software engineer. Last month I handed over command of the same organization. Twenty-three years in one place is unfashionable in this industry. What it bought me was the chance to watch the same systems through several generations of technology, and to stay long enough to find out whether my own decisions were any good. Most of us leave before the answer arrives. The last three years at Ofek 324, the Israeli Air Force’s primary software and technology organization, were the most demanding in its history. I’m not going to summarize them in a post. What I will say is that I watched several hundred engineers, data scientists, and infrastructure professionals carry a load nobody could have planned for, and hold the standard throughout. That is what I’m proudest of, and almost none of it was mine. I’m moving to the commercial technology sector now, looking for a senior engineering or technology leadership role. I’ll also be writing here more than I have, mostly about what actually happens when you try to scale an engineering organization. Including the parts that didn’t work. To everyone who built that place with me: thank you.

I cannot stop thinking about that little girl and the story of her small cloth doll. A doll she reportedly carried everywhere, held close when she slept, and perhaps reached for whenever she was frightened. Like any child, she needed someone to hold her, protect her, and tell her everything would be alright. But nobody could save her. On April 6, 1944, the Nazis stormed the children's home in Izieu, France. Claudine and her older sister Mina were taken away. Both were murdered at Auschwitz. What kind of monsters look into the eyes of a five-year-old child and decide she does not deserve to live? I am a father. I cannot imagine that terror. I cannot imagine her mother's heartbreak. And I cannot understand how the world can witness the Holocaust and still make room for Jew-hatred. Claudine wasn't a number. She was someone's baby. She deserved birthdays, bedtime stories, laughter, and a lifetime of love. Instead, she got Auschwitz. I am Muslim. I will never be silent about this evil. Rest in peace, little Claudine. Last week, we held the LUNA Semi-Final 2026 — and this cohort is truly exceptional. 20 space-tech ventures went through a rigorous three-stage evaluation: written One-Pagers, live technical booth assessments with physical prototypes, and final-stage pitching. Nine Israeli startups advanced to the Grand Final, alongside three outstanding international teams from the U.S., Nigeria, and India. This year’s selected ventures span critical space domains: • SKYSHIELD – Biodegradable, re-entry-safe thermal insulation for CubeSats. • ASTRELAX – Closed-loop neuroregulation wearable for astronaut stress stabilization. • ASTROFLEX – Smart fine-motor rehabilitation system for microgravity, with strong Earth applications. • BIO-CYCLE – Microgravity bioreactor converting plastic waste into usable chemical feedstock. • NOMAD – Autonomous robotic platform for hazardous lunar and Martian environments. • MARCELL – Lab-grown protein platform using local Martian resources. • LUNAR-WHISPER – EMG-based silent communication interface for high-noise missions. • VESTA – Wearable neuro-visual stabilization system to mitigate space motion sickness. • STARHOLD (India) – A physics-based authentication layer anchored in celestial coordinates. • FLEXISTRIP (Nigeria) – Advanced reflective emergency signaling for extreme environments. • US–Israel CubeSat Challenge (USA) – A joint mission to design a CubeSat capable of stable orbital control while performing controlled multi-axis rotation for remote sensing — including simulations, control algorithms, and physical attitude-control development. In the coming months, the teams will deepen scientific validation with professional mentors, refine their engineering models, and build full business and market strategies. The momentum is strong — and we are heading full speed toward the Grand Final in Budapest this June. Congratulations to all the teams advancing to the next stage.
