As the Cloud and AI Development Act (CADA) raises the bar for digital sovereignty, strategic AI infrastructures should rely on European technologies. The good news is that Spain already has world-class capabilities in this area. #OpenNebula, highlighted by the European Commission’s Open Source Strategy as a key industry-ready European open-source technology, will be part of the CESGA AI Factory and is expected to contribute to future deployments at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and other EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) AI Factories across Europe. Dr. Ignacio M. Llorente ha compartido estoDigital sovereignty is becoming one of the defining challenges of our time, not only in Europe but increasingly across other regions, including Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom. It was a pleasure to participate as a panelist at European Policy Centre #BESF2026, discussing how Europe can strengthen its technological autonomy while preserving openness, innovation, and competition. During the discussion, I shared my perspective on the role of vendor-neutral cloud platforms such as OpenNebula Systems in enabling organizations to build sovereign cloud and AI factory infrastructures. Digital sovereignty is not about isolation; it is about maintaining control over critical infrastructure, data, and technology choices. We also explored the implications of the Cloud and AI Development Act (CADA), which reflects Europe’s growing commitment to strengthening its cloud and AI ecosystem and reducing strategic dependencies. I was also pleased to meet Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), following her presentation on the critical role that investment is playing in strengthening Europe’s competitiveness, innovation capacity, and digital sovereignty. Again, it was very interesting to see what all the vendors had to offer in the HPC field. And, yes, it was a lot of AI and more and more Quantum. The best part of the three intense days was meeting new people or getting together with people I already know for years. Sometimes it was just a brief handshake and talk, like with Dr. Ignacio M. Llorente of OpenNebula Systems. Sometimes it was tasting a whisky with the people of ClusterVision like Fabian Nowee, Antoine Schonewille and Dea Mataic, while discussing about their cluster-management solution. Sometimes it was finding out someone was not attending but getting new contacts. Like Chase Eyster of Open OnDemand was not there while Emily Moffat Sadeghi and Braeden Singleton did a great job in replacing him. Sometimes it was about a great project like EESSI meeting Kenneth Hoste en getting a goodie like a an EESSI mug. Sometimes it was the people of SURF like Bas van der Vlies and Jaap Dijkshoorn, from the netherlands, but still it takes a conference abroad like ISC High Performance to meet and have a good time together. #HPC #Supercomputing #openondemand #trinityX #opennebula #ISC
