Fun fact: Europe faced more than 287 million flight disruptions in 2024 alone! 😱 But now an EU proposal is threatening these hard-earned rights by pushing to raise the threshold for compensation — from 3 hours to 5, 9, or even 12 hours, depending on the distance of your flight. 🤯 🚨 Here are a few reasons why this rule would be huge step back: 1. It could increase delays and reduce passenger compensation by 85%. 2. It would increase profits for airlines at the expense of passenger rights. 3. It would reduce incentives for airlines to reduce delays and operate efficiently, meaning more frustration for passengers and higher risk of CO2 emissions. 4. It would also lead to a lot of confusion when travelling the world, since the three-hour rule is adopted globally by countries like the UK, Canada, Turkey, and Brazil, creating consistency in passenger rights. Since we launched the AirHelp app, we constantly look at data. Obvious, right? Everybody says that. Well, we actually do it, looking at both quantitative and qualitative data. If users want to track flights, they first have to find them. And this is where data showed us issues. Turns out there are 50+ ways to input “Ryanair”. Typing in general is prone to errors. So even though we had flights, some people were not finding them. Kudos to our data team for a great in-depth analysis. When we knew the problem, we started looking for solutions. At least two people (me included) thought about a robust search engine solution. They are powerful but can be pricey and implementation may take a while. And we want to move fast. This is where our engineering steps in. They looked at the problem and thought about implementing an AI model in between what the user types in and what we have in our databases. Initially as a PoC, just to quickly test it. This PoC worked like magic. It solved the issue and allowed us to refocus on other topics. Search precision went up by 40%. It took us only a few days. And it costs us a whopping 0.1 euro a day.

Rumored reorgs don’t add up on a whiteboard. McKinsey consultants show up to “streamline.” The boss pretends she doesn't see you when you walk past. Feedback goes from specific to scripted, or suddenly sharp and documented. HR starts popping into conversations for no apparent reason. And then comes the unplanned “quick sync” with your manager… where HR is already on the call. By collecting a continuous sidestream of wash water, the OmniFresh uses a sample that represent the entire lot of produce being washed. The OmniFresh does not require bacterial culture or enrichment, and it detects both live and dead bacteria in the collected sample using an in-line sensor. Detection occurs in an array biosensor…
