Description of suggested change:

Hi. Please link 'Wikipedia' in the text column. Many other pages are linked, and Wikipedia is usually linked at first mention on such instructive pages. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:44, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That would be at the first mention. Note that the WMF is linked a bit below. Thanks again, Randy Kryn (talk) 15:46, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is this really necessary? How could someone not know what Wikipedia is? * Pppery * it has begun... 16:41, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to agree that this seems unnecessary — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:00, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not done: per objections Sohom (talk) 18:52, 2 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to an IP for alerting me to this decision, it just seemed so obvious to me I didn't put the page on my watchlist. Pppery, MSGJ, and Sohom Datta, the link to Wikipedia, as with any link, is to provide readers with a chance to read the full page. In this case 15,000 readers a day. At least some of the hundreds of thousands of readers a month may be interested in reading more about the encyclopedia, especially if other links on the page are utilized. Please reconsider. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 12:20, 14 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that the first link actually takes the reader offsite. It is common practice to link Wikipedia at first mention, and this should be no different. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:25, 14 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This request is still viable, and my response is still open for discussion with the editors linked above (Pppery, MSGJ, and Sohom Datta. A key fact is that the Foundation is quickly linked on the page, so Wikipedia, well-linked, would attract new views by both editors and general readers who never thought to read the article. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:50, 8 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Would like to ping HJ Mitchell, who reverted several pages where I linked 'Wikipedia' and we had a brief discussion. I did intend to follow up on the Wikipedia page, but have waited for the Arb elections to end, and will create a discussion soon if we can't resolve this here. But here's a comparative question for everyone: Encyclopedia Britannica appears in the first or second sentence of a page, do we link it? Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 23:41, 8 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
just to briefly answer your question: in an article, yes. If I was reading an informational page on Britannica's website, would I expect to be linked to an encyclopaedia article about Britannica? No, I would think that was ridiculous at best and mildly annoying at worst. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:54, 8 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
We differ on that, I'd link it. Take this page for example, which is what we are discussing here. It averages 15,000 views a day. Judging by the topic, 'Wikipedia: Contact us', I'd guess that the vast majority of those 15,000 people have never looked at a Wikipedia information article before. Looking at it from that perspective, it seems logical for 'Wikipedia' to be linked in the top-of-page statement, "Thank you for your interest in contacting Wikipedia", to quickly offer new readers the chance to find out more about the encyclopedia. That's what links are for. Randy Kryn (talk) 01:02, 9 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, your point (HJ Mitchell) about this not being a mainspace page, please note that this page is the sixth item on the left-side menu which is prominently presented to Wikipedia readers on every page. This sitewide link accounts for its 15,000 daily views. 'Wikipedia' is linked on three items on this omnipresent left-side navigational guide (Main page, Wikipedia: Contents, and Wikipedia:About), and, since 'Wikipedia' is not mentioned near the top on Portal:Current events, Random page, or donations, they do not contain the link. The only first-six leftside items where 'Wikipedia' is not linked is this page, Wikipedia:Contact us. I hope this helps in adding more reasoning to my proposal, thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:46, 10 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
This is very much "if it turns blue, we must link it". I would actually argue that there are too many links on this page as it is and most of them are useless but this one would be especially useless, if not distracting. If someone has reached the "contact us" page of a website, they don't want to be sent off to read an encyclopaedia article about the website, they want to know how they can contact someone to resolve their problem. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:59, 10 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Happy Birthday everyone! HJ Mitchell, let's not judge what readers want to do without giving them the direct chance to explore the article on Wikipedia by adding the obvious link because, logically, 15,000 readers a day are not contacting anyone on the site. As mentioned above, the other articles on the left-hand navigational bar link Wikipedia, which seems a normal thing to do. Please reconsider and give some of the 15,000 daily readers a functional Wikipedia gift on its 25th anniversary. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 10:43, 15 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
You keep ignoring all the arguments against, waiting a while, then making the same request. I know it seems obvious to you but it's equally obvious to other people that such a link would not be helpful. If you want to progress this, I suggest you open a discussion at the village pump to get more input. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:52, 15 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and Happy 25th again! Not ignoring arguments, as much as everyone else at least, but yes, it seems obvious, as some (or many) of the 15,000 daily readers of this page will find a link to Wikipedia helpful. Even as I type that it seems obvious. Will follow up someplace, thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 11:57, 15 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Contact us/Article subjects should mention BLPN directly

I am aware that BLPN is linked in the Wikipedia:FAQ/Article subjects linked on Wikipedia:Contact us/Article subjects, but I think that WP:BLPN should be mentioned on the "contact us" page directly. For relatively obscure biographical subjects, posting to a talkpage that nobody may read is unlikely to actually resolve the issue if there is one. I have had multiple biography subjects complain that BLPN is hard to find despite the fact that it is often the best way to resolve issues regarding articles on living people. Hemiauchenia (talk) 17:06, 19 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. The paths to resolution on a great variety of problems on WP are opaque or convoluted. Coming across grossly egregious BLP violations (particularly those that may expose the foundation to legal action for libel), the need for a revdel can be pressing. Each time it happens, I'd have to poke and prod around the site to find out how to contact an active admin. I finally gave up and added a link to it on my personal 'toolbox' page. For someone unfamiliar with WP, I'd hazard it's beyond frustrating. This needs to be improved. This is a step in the right direction. cheers. anastrophe, an editor he is. 22:04, 19 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

George Pegram

I heard of a banjo player named George Pegram. But I read about different George Pegram’s on Wikipedia. Zekesmukler (talk) 03:19, 21 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Per the recent WMF notice and its FAQ, this page should include a link to wmf:Legal:Wikimedia Foundation Legal and Safety Contact Information. Any thoughts on how best to integrate it? jlwoodwa (talk) 23:25, 25 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There's now a Legal and Safety contact link at the very bottom of every WP page, below the CCA-SA notice. FactOrOpinion (talk) 17:56, 26 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The FAQ requests that If wikis have existing “Contact” pages and links, the community will update these to prevent confusion. I agree with this – someone reading this page could reasonably expect to find the relevant WMF contact link within the page's content. jlwoodwa (talk) 01:09, 27 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Agree an addition should be made here. You're an admin; you're welcome to add one. * Pppery * it has begun... 01:11, 27 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Pppery, @Jlwoodwa thank you for helping with this. Happy holidays. - STei (WMF) (talk) 12:31, 27 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
