Articles choosing
[edit]Hi! I’m a chemistry student and a new Wikipedia editor. I noticed that you work on many different topics form marine life to chemistry related topics. How do you choose articles to write or improve? It feels like most topics are already covered and every idea I have is already taken ~2026-39046-01 (talk) 15:08, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @~2026-39046-01! Thanks for noticing! I write/start articles on novel topics that pop up in one of my feeds. Just tracking the new stuff. 99% of what I do is edit existing articles. Either to copyedit or add a new fact about the topic. Enjoy! Lfstevens (talk) 20:43, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
You're invited to the Mentorship noticeboard
[edit]Hi, Lfstevens. You are cordially invited to the brand new Wikipedia:Mentorship noticeboard. I get the impression sometimes that we mentors are each toiling in our own cubbyhole or hamster wheel, quietly answering mentee questions with little to no interaction with other mentors. I think we have a lot to share and learn from each other, and I know it will make me feel better just having the opportunity to interact with you and other mentors there, and I hope it will for you, too. Looking forward to hearing your feedback. Please take the § Survey when you get there! Mathglot (talk) 02:59, 11 July 2026 (UTC)

Question from Jacksonbudz (01:26, 18 July 2026)
[edit]i want to make an article about my uncle he is very deserving of one being vice president of the itif which specializes in technology and that sort of thing. however, i dont want him to know that i made the article, is there a way i can become anonymous of something? --Jacksonbudz (talk) 01:26, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Jacksonbudz! Generally, it's not OK to write on Wikipedia about someone you're closely associated with. As far as anonymity, you can change your handle. Lfstevens (talk) 00:31, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

Hey, I've seen your refactoring of the page. Thanks for your copyediting, but I believe you went too far with shortening of the introduction in , especially by removing the countries. As far as majority of the modern Slovenia it was part of HRE, Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary which were successor countries (to some extent, but regionally looking they were) while Venice and Kingdom of Hungary only had the westernmost and easternmost parts. Claiming Slovene lands were repeatedly occupied creates a false impression. There is also no mentioning of the Roman Empire, which creates almost a millennia long gap completely skipping their heritage. Can we make a compromise on this? Many thanks and best regards, A09|(talk) 21:11, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, @A09! Thanks for noticing. As you can see I'm up to my eyeballs in this thing. I'll be happy to take another look. I probably will hit that last as my knowledge and perspective deepens (at least I hope it does). I welcome feedback of all kinds. Keep it coming! Lfstevens (talk) 00:42, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- No worries, that's why we have a community so we can all keep an eye on eachother :) Perhaps somewhere along you should mention Carantania and Carniola as the historical predecessor to modern lands of Slovenia, but as you said, it's a work in progress so I'll keep you working on that. Question from RiyaOfTheSpectra (12:30, 24 July 2026)
[edit]Hello! I’ve found a suggested edit, for the article List of Spectrscopists. The page notes that it doesn’t have any references. Considering that almost each person in the list has their own page, are citations really required? --RiyaOfTheSpectra (talk) 12:30, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @RiyaOfTheSpectra! The rule (often violated) is that every claim should have a reliable source. If an item in a list has its own article and that article supports the claim, then another source is less important. For list entries that do not have an article, a source is certainly required. Good question! Lfstevens (talk) 19:24, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
Question from NaturalPolicy (13:32, 26 July 2026)
[edit]Hello Mentor, i have been editing some historic sections of wikipedia pages, is the current way correct? --NaturalPolicy (talk) 13:32, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @NaturalPolicy. Thanks for helping out. History sections are written in a variety of ways, generally in chronological order. Do you have a specific article in mind? Lfstevens (talk) 20:26, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- I have added more history for Holstein-Rendsburg and Andenne and would like to verify if this is correct NaturalPolicy (talk) 07:27, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- Both look pretty good. Some notes:
- Holstein
- - You can remove the tag. You do have sources. Please a section title "References" above the numbered list.
- - Instead of "Rise and fall" title the section "History"
- - In one spot you spelled it Schlewig.
- - Add a link on Hanseatic.
- - Otto II does not reference an article, so remove the link.
- Andenne
- - also has invalid links
- - in history sections, generally use past tense, (was, not has been) unless it continues
- - in one spot you spelled it monastery
- - better to say with seven chicks
- - generally avoid the use of words like today, currently and now as articles should be written to last indefinitely
- - "is traditionally" might be better as "was traditionally"
- - generally link each thing once in an article and definitely not twice in one paragraph (Charles Martel)
- - burned rather than burned down
- - Norsemen, not Norse man
- - split the burning sentence in two
- - eliminate spaces between a reference and what immediately precedes it
- - Middle not Middel
- - move the Ceramics museum out of history into
- - generally don't need to use also, unless it's to counterpoint what precedes it
- - generally don't need to say evening (or time of day) unless it's particularly relevant
- - unless the beginning is itself important, talk about the event, not when it started: they entered on the 19th and massacred x people, claiming that...
- Keep going! Lfstevens (talk) 19:43, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the review, though a few notes.
- You mention that 'also' doesn't need to be used unless its an counterpoint but the definition states that it's 'in addition'.
- Also to move out 'Ceramics museum' out of history into... where could I place it. I am guessing this can be applied for the entire 'today' or 'now' sentences.
- Thanks again for reviewing and I will keep it up! NaturalPolicy (talk) 20:53, 27 July 2026 (UTC)
- You certainly can use also, but that often means an endless stream of them. Many articles on places talk about facilities, amenities, etc., in a section for that. Lfstevens (talk) 21:24, 27 July 2026 (UTC)

Question from Pakr2K on Draft:โรงเรียนเศรษฐบุตร อุปถัมภ์ (15:58, 28 July 2026)
[edit]Sorry to disturb. Is this draft about typing all the information only or what? --Pakr2K (talk) 15:59, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Pakr2K! I'm happy to have your questions. Not sure what you're asking, though. You can write about whatever interests you. If you make an article as a draft, it is not visible unless specifically searched for. You can start with text, and add citations as you gather them. Once everything is ready (every claim has a reliable source, etc.) you can move your article into the main space where it will appear in searches. Also make sure to add links to it from other articles, add categories, etc. Have fun! Lfstevens (talk) 02:11, 29 July 2026 (UTC)

HI I'm doing a biography on Jeff bezos for school could u please give me some tips since u'r my mentor and all. Thanks --Abdully12 (talk) 08:38, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Abdully12! Are you planning to edit the Jeff Bezos article, or is this strictly for school? If it's strictly for school, I don't have much to offer. Basically, do your research, write your article, and provide a reliable source for each claim. It's well worth learning how to do it, because we all communicate in writing a lot more than we used to and if you can't write clearly and effectively, some people (like your boss at work) notice. Lfstevens (talk) 19:13, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
Hi, coudl you help me puvlish the page I have created? thank you --KimonVogt (talk) 17:38, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @KimonVogt! Publishing is easy! In the search box, type the article name (make sure to use correct punctuation and capitalization). You'll see a page that says something like "The page XYZ doesn't exist. Click on XYZ to create it." Click the link and the page is created. Put your text on the page and save it. It is then instantly published. Make sure to add your article to categories (at the bottom of the page). Please structure your article with appropriate sections, and provide a reference for every claim. Have fun, and LMK if you have any other questions. Lfstevens (talk) 19:18, 5 August 2026 (UTC)
Question from Alarinkiri (05:45, 6 August 2026)
[edit]Hello Thanks Lfstevens for your mentorship. I am the original author (mostly) and now the sole maintainer of a 50-year old software product. I have a slight commercial interest (not enough to live on!). The software is a Basic interpreter developed when I worked for a software company. When they decided to stop support, I bought the rights for myself. I have a (dwindling) number of customers who sell their business applications written in this version of the Basic language. I'd like to record the history of the the product before it vanishes completely. Any advice (especially "don't do that"!) welcomed :) --Alarinkiri (talk) 05:45, 6 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Alarinkiri! Generally, Wikipedia frowns on people writing about their own stuff, calling it a conflict of interest. Better to have someone with no direct connection to do it, if you can find someone. The goal is to be as objective and disinterested as possible. Good luck! Question from AstronautPreference (19:19, 7 August 2026)
[edit]Hi there! I wanted to add a problem with extra billing to the controversy section I just created for Claude (AI). My source for this is a GitHub issue that highlights the exact issue that a user encountered, but I don't think that qualifies as a credible source under Wikipedia's guidelines. I've struggled to find any credible articles talking about this in detail, so do you think you could help me source the information properly? Thanks! --AstronautPreference (talk) 19:19, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @AstronautPreference! I don't have the bandwidth to jump in on your project. One way to search for sources is to ask an AI. If you are still unable to find a reliable source, please don't add the material to the article. You could add the Github link in the External links section... How do I upload a photograph as proof to back up an artists nickname?? Someone is assuming I am acting in bad faith and removing my edits and banning me and such but I have proof but there is no clear path to submit it. --Realrocker1969 (talk) 04:16, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Realrocker1969! The policy on photos is that they have to be in the public domain in order to protect copyrights. What comment are you receiving from the editor who is deleting it? Lfstevens (talk) 02:03, 12 August 2026 (UTC)
- Well the photo in question is one my daughter took and she gave me permission to share it, I'm not sure if that makes it public domain or not. Among other things they've baselessly accused me of using AI, which I am morally against. It is a photograph my daughter took in a record store, if I knew it was going to be such a headache I would've never bothered. The internet is a sad place these days. Thanks for your kindness and help. Realrocker1969 (talk) 19:56, 17 August 2026 (UTC)

Hi Lfstevens, thanks for the offer to help.
Some context up front, because it's relevant to what I'll be doing: I'm an independent contractor and one of my clients is Disruption Banking, a UK fintech news publication. I've put a paid-contribution disclosure on my user page, and I've created a Wikidata item for the publication today (Q141108939) with the same disclosure there.
What I'd eventually like to do is occasionally suggest their original reporting as a source on articles where it fills a real gap — always via {{edit COI}} on the talk page, never editing those articles myself, and accepting declines without arguing. I'm working through some suggested edits first to learn the tools properly.
Two questions: 1. Does that approach sound right to you, or is there anything you'd do differently? 2. Is there a common mistake you see from people in my position that I should avoid?
Thanks! --AkosSzima (talk) 16:04, 17 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @AkosSzima!
- 1 As long as everything is disclosed, and you don't edit the articles yourself, that should be fine.
- 2 Sometimes people offer to compensate editors for working on an article. That's a no-no. Otherwise, AFAIK, you should be fine. I should say that I am not an expert in this area. Lfstevens (talk) 03:18, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's helpful, and noted on the compensation point. I'll keep to disclosed talk-page requests only.
- Appreciate you taking the time. AkosSzima (talk) 09:03, 18 August 2026 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, hope you are well. Quick question, how do I create a citation ? --Mash-Eazy (talk) 17:40, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Mash-Eazy! Start an edit. Position the cursor just following the text that you want to provide a source for.
- - On a PC, press ctl-shift-k. A box will pop up. If you have a URL, enter it in the e.g. field and click Create. It should create the citation for you. Click Insert to accept it. If you get an error message, click Manual. Pick either Website, News, Book, or Journal (for a scientific article). Fill in the fields and click Insert.
- - On a phone, you have to enter the citation manually. It would look something like [1] You can find more details at wp:Citing sources. Lfstevens (talk) 01:37, 19 August 2026 (UTC)

--Syakahama (talk) 22:18, 23 August 2026 (UTC)

- Hello again so the thing is I want an article about me because I am an artist from Botswana. So can someone write an article about me or do I have to do it myself
- what are the steps I have to do to get that writen Ginger Beats Bw (talk) 11:35, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
- We aren't supposed to write about ourselves or anybody we're close to. And we're not supposed to pay someone to do it. So find someone to write it for you. I don't write articles on request. Too much else going on. Good luck finding someone. Lfstevens (talk) 01:00, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
How can i upload any writer's profile? --Ahirrk (talk) 20:14, 25 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Ahirrk! You can write an article about anybody you want (except for yourself and those close to you). Search to make sure there is no existing article with that title (sometimes multiple people have the same name). If there isn't one already, You should see a message saying that and giving you a link to click so that you can create it. Make sure to provide a reliable source for anything you put in it. Good luck! Lfstevens (talk) 01:03, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
Question from Lenthewisest (23:14, 26 August 2026)
[edit]how do I bring existing articles up to date and know if it is up to date and also how do I know what link to find to have a source to another site because nothing seems to say what the paragraph said more that the actual parapraph --Lenthewisest (talk) 23:15, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Lenthewisest! That's the basic challenge of Wikipedia! There's no magic formula. You just have to search until you find good sources and use them to update the article (adding a reference for each thing you add). Good luck. Lfstevens (talk) 01:05, 27 August 2026 (UTC)

- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Titus Mubanga Kangwa! Basically, you need somebody else to write it and publish it. And you're not supposed to pay them to do so. Good luck! Lfstevens (talk) 01:18, 31 August 2026 (UTC)

[edit]I don’t understand how to create this article --Thefootballguy101 (talk) 12:33, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Thefootballguy101! If you click on the link you provided to the draft, you will see a blank page. You can write the article there, saving drafts as you go. When you are ready, you can then use the Move option in the Page menu at the top of your page to move it from the drafts area into the main encyclopedia. Happy to answer more questions. Enjoy! What is the most important thing I need to understand about editing? --Meldzaan (talk) 07:39, 5 September 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Meldzaan! Great question! There are multiple kinds of editing. If you are editing to improve the prose, the most important thing is to consider your audience. For most articles, I work to keep things easy to read. Short, simple sentences, avoiding $5 words and jargon.
- If you are editing to add information, the most important thing is to include a WP:Reliable sources for every claim that you make.
- Enjoy! Lfstevens (talk) 15:57, 5 September 2026 (UTC)

Confusing Error
[edit]I'm trying to add a photo to a page and while it does add the picture, it has text behind it saying '[[file:|frameless|class=pageimage|alt=]]' and I don't know how to fix it. Hello, I see that you are the editing mentor assigned to me. Could you please have a look at the rewrite of the entry in the sandbox and approve it, or raise any issues to be solved before it can be published? Should you or I publish it in the end? Many thanks, JiL --JiLf8 (talk) 13:23, 13 September 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @JiLf8! I am not an article reviewer and do not approve or publish others' drafts, but please ask me any specific questions you may have. Generally, nobody needs to approve your edits and you can publish them whenever you feel they are ready. As always, every claim should be supported by a reliable source. [edit]Hi, I am interested in creating a Wikipedia page for my father, a veteran New York Times reporter. Can you help me with this? --Elleneskenazi (talk) 18:14, 16 September 2026 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, @Elleneskenazi! Unfortunately, Wikipedia prohibits people from writing about those with whom they have a personal relationship. Best alternative is to find another editor and interest them in the project. Lfstevens (talk) 22:29, 16 September 2026 (UTC)

- Welcome to Wikipedia, @SmadgeSmoke ! Wikipedia rules do not permit people to write about themselves or those they are closely associated with. Instead somebody else would need to write the piece. Lfstevens (talk) 00:13, 18 September 2026 (UTC)

Question from Bwvstewart on User:Davidgothberg (19:27, 24 September 2026)
[edit]Hi. I think my account has been hacked or created by codex. I have no idea why I was assigned a mentor. I did not sign up to edit. And nor did I make any edits or upload anything myself. I did a few minor edits under another account a couple of years ago that was then deleted, because all my edits were rejected. I created a new account purely for keeping track of pages I’m reading not for editing. From what I can gather from your tools, this user account has been active with many edits, unless I misread the tool. Codex is a security disaster. Please advise whom and how I should inform the responsible security function. --Bwvstewart (talk) 19:27, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Bwvstewart! Seems like you're asking a out the @Davdgothberg account, right? Many edits there, going back to 2020. So if the account was hacked, it was years ago. I didn't see amu edits on the Bwvstewart account. Please give me some more context. Lfstevens (talk) 21:39, 26 September 2026 (UTC)
