Draft:Papa Joe Hendrick

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph Riddick Hendrick Jr. (October 29, 1919 – July 14, 2004), commonly known as "Papa Joe" Hendrick, was an American motorsports figure associated with Hendrick Motorsports. He was the father of Rick Hendrick and John Hendrick, and the grandfather of Ricky Hendrick.[1][2]

He was born in Palmer Springs, Virginia, on October 29, 1919. During World War II, he served as a flight engineer and gunner in the United States Army Air Forces. After the war, he farmed in southern Virginia and later worked as a supervisor at Burlington Mills.[2]

Upon retiring from farming in 1979, Hendrick moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he worked with his sons Rick and John in the retail automobile business at City Chevrolet. After Rick Hendrick founded Hendrick Motorsports in 1984, Papa Joe became a longtime presence in the organization and was associated with its show-car operations.[2][1]

At Hendrick Motorsports, Papa Joe Hendrick was listed as the owner of the No. 25 NASCAR Cup Series car.[3]

In June 2004, North Carolina governor Mike Easley presented Hendrick and his wife, Mary, with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of the state's highest civilian honors, for dedication and service to their organization.[1]

The road serving the Hendrick Motorsports campus is named Papa Joe Hendrick Boulevard. Since 1995, the organization has also presented the Papa Joe Hendrick Award of Excellence, an employee-voted honor named after him.[4][5]

Hendrick died on July 14, 2004, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, after battling cancer. He was 84 years old.[2][1]
