Stainless steel round bars duplex steel 1.4462 / S31803
What this product is
Stainless steel round bars duplex steel 1.4462 / S31803 are solid, cylindrical bars made from duplex stainless steel commonly referred to as duplex 2205. Duplex stainless steels have a two‑phase microstructure - a balanced mixture of austenite and ferrite - which gives them a combination of strength and corrosion resistance not found in standard austenitic grades. This grade is often referenced by European and trade designations such as EN X2CrNiMoN22‑5‑3 (1.4462) and by legacy/industry UNS/AISI identifiers like 2205 / S31803.
Key properties
Typical forms and common uses
These are offered as solid round bars and are used to manufacture parts and components where both strength and corrosion resistance are required. Typical applications include:
- shafts, axles and drive components
- bolts, studs and fasteners
- valve stems, pump shafts, and impellers
- bushes, sleeves and mechanical fittings
- pins, rollers and press rolls
- components for pressure vessels and pipework in aggressive environments
Industries and customers
Duplex stainless steel round bars 1.4462 are suitable for a wide range of sectors, from small engineering workshops to heavy industry:
- Chemical and petrochemical plants - piping, shafts and fittings exposed to chlorides and aggressive chemicals.
- Offshore and marine - risers, valves, fittings, and structural components where seawater resistance is needed.
- Desalination and water treatment - pipework, shafts and rotating parts operating in salty environments.
- Energy and power generation - heat exchangers, pumps and fasteners.
- Paper, pulp and mining - wear‑resistant components in abrasive and corrosive conditions.
- Aerospace and automotive - where high strength combined with corrosion resistance is beneficial for specific parts.
- Small workshops and maintenance - for bespoke shafts, repaired components or upgrades where better corrosion resistance and strength are required than general‑purpose stainless steel.
Material details and handling notes
Composition and classification: Duplex 1.4462 (often called duplex 2205) is an austenitic‑ferritic stainless steel with deliberate additions of chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen to achieve the duplex microstructure and corrosion properties. It is distinct from ferritic or austenitic grades (such as 304/316) and offers a middle ground combining benefits of both.
Welding and fabrication: The material is weldable using correct consumables and procedures. To retain corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, welding should be performed with appropriate filler metals designed for duplex stainless steels and with control of heat input. Post‑weld heat treatment is not always necessary but follow material and welding guidelines for critical applications. If in doubt, consult our technical support or a welding procedure specification (WPS).
Machining: Duplex steels are stronger and tougher than austenitic grades, so machining parameters should be adjusted (rigid set‑ups, suitable tooling and coolant). The absence of excess stabilising elements in standard 1.4462 contributes to acceptable machinability compared with some other duplex variants.
Why choose stainless steel round bars duplex steel 1.4462 / S31803
Choose this grade when you need: higher mechanical strength than 304/316, improved resistance to pitting and stress corrosion in chloride environments, and an economically attractive option compared with super‑duplex grades when moderate to high corrosion resistance and strength are required. It is ideal for parts that must be robust but also resistant to corrosive media.
