Aya Ferguson videredelte detteAya Ferguson videredelte detteThe hardest decisions in transformation are rarely right versus wrong. Those are the easy ones. Last week, I had the pleasure of being in the room at a SUMS Consulting event with Professor Jane Harrington and Georgina Randsley de Moura as they spoke about building the LASE University Group. In my line of work, I'm often listening to leaders speak about change and transformation, and lets just say, I don't always come away feeling that they actually understand what it's like in the 'trenches of transformation' and what true price change actually extracts of their organisations and its people. But listening to Jane and George, I came away inspired and you just knew they had the receipts for: Courage and foresight - to gaze beyond the immediate horizon and try what hadn’t been done before, knowing going first means the most scrutiny. Strength and resolution - to stick with the principles they set first (not as an afterthought) even in the face of bufetting doubt from those around them. Humility and grace - to say openly that they know they haven’t got it all right. But want to give the new way of doing things a chance and then be willing to change direction if the situations calls for it. In transformation, the harder choice is often not right versus wrong, but which of two right things to do. Harder still is choosing when none of the options is ideal. Either way, good leaders know a decision still has to be made and make it. More transformation leadership like this, please! Thanks again Joel Arber and team for putting together an excellent session. #HigherEducation #Change #Leadership #ChangeHE

Aya Ferguson videredelte detteAya Ferguson videredelte detteWe're going to see more mergers and acquisitions of universities in the UK in the coming months, along with some very different models for shared services (well, different for the higher education sector). There’s plenty of learning that can be taken from institutions which have already been down that path - the attached map shares just a small snapshot of some of them. However, there’s also a striking lesson in here about how many other opportunities for bold and innovative collaboration have been lost, and not because the regulatory hurdles couldn’t be overcome but because the trade-offs involved often require a huge dose of both trust and humility. There’s an entire playbook which can lead a university leadership team through the technical components behind a merger, but no consultancy can be paid to inject the relationships, trust and mutual respect which success in this sector really depends upon. My view about this only deepened at the SUMS Consulting event we held last week with the leaders of the newly formed LASE. In and of itself LASE is a great example of how strength can be found through collaboration and innovation, and I’d never water down the huge amount of technical process that’s required in a change of this magnitude. But I’m not sure it could have ever happened without the relationships at senior level being so strong and without such a shared sense of wanting to do what was right. Anyway, whether your university is in acquisition mode, conducting a full options appraisal or simply exploring possible alternatives, shout up if you need help. We probably have everything you need!

Aya Ferguson delte detteThe drawback of having a job you love is the difficulty in switching off. During a week’s holiday in Morocco I’ve mostly managed but i did have major FOMO at missing yesterday’s SUMS Consulting Shaping the Future of HE event and discussing lessons from LASE multi-university group. Telling my husband about it and trying to discuss the future of Higher Education and more possible mergers, acquistions and strategic partnerships, wasn’t all that satisfactory. A school teacher and pretty annoying brainiac, his main contribution to the debate was ‘if universities merge, does this mean they can only have one University Challenge team?’ Joel Arber and David Becker did this come up yesterday and should it be a key part of the business case for potential mergers?!

Aya Ferguson syntes godt om detteAya Ferguson syntes godt om detteChocolates, coaching cards and a dash of nostalgia It was great fun yesterday to join two energising external affairs teams at the British Society for Haematology for a forward look after a period of change. We explored their shared sense of purpose, and how they want to work together to balance day-to-day operational demands with a more ambitious push towards their longer-term strategic goals. It’s ten years since I first set foot in the BSH board room as a young(er) trustee, and it’s immensely satisfying to see how much the organisation has grown and developed since then. I’ve loved working with the staff, and the names of past presidents on the wall brought back happy memories of the doctors I’ve worked alongside too. Medical societies bring together fabulous people: people seeking real connection, and people wanting to make a lasting impact on healthcare. It’s a real pleasure to stay in touch with BSH’s work as a coach. Thank you to Carol Bewick Dina Almuli and Theresa Crossley for briefing me so well and involving me in your plans to connect people, catalyse careers and champion change. We left you some chocolates… if you can find them! And a special shout out to Cheng-Hock Toh, CBE, MD, FRCP, FRCPath for being such an adeptly inclusive leader and President during my early trustee years.

In today’s global higher education market, inclusive recruitment can be a strategic advantage. When done right, the benefits are clear: • Diverse leadership drives better performance • Structured processes reduce bias and increase fairness • Inclusivity strengthens reputation and candidate attraction • Inclusive practices boost retention and engagement Universities that embed these principles into hiring will not only attract top talent but also future-proof their institutions. To uncover more about this, read the latest article by Alexandra Albone Albone, who explores how inclusive recruitment can transform leadership and institutional success: https://lnkd.in/ewpr3JAF

The #SUMSConsulting Change Community has created this Change and Wellbeing Toolkit - “Leadership do’s and don’ts” - with a focus on leading change in higher education with wellbeing at its heart. Developed with the collective experience of change practitioners across our member universities, this document sets out practical do’s and don’ts, leadership principles, anonymised case studies and simple tools to help leaders, managers and change teams to plan and deliver change that protects people as well as institutional objectives. Many thanks to all members of the #SUMSConsulting Change Community. In recognition that Change has become a constant across the sector, and that the human impact is real, you have helped to develop a toolkit that focuses on the everyday choices leaders make - what they say, what they do and what they choose not to address, and your case-studies included in the toolkit have demonstrated how those choices shape psychological safety and team resilience. If you lead change, use this toolkit to prompt honest conversations about risk, context and capacity, and to model the clearer, kinder leadership behaviours that help people and institutions adapt successfully. Interesting conversation in The University of Salford Strategic Change Network today around the language we use to describe roles in change. Champions. Advocates. Agents. Practitioners. Sponsors. Facilitators. Influencers. These terms are often used interchangeably, but do we always have a shared understanding of what they actually mean in practice? Surfacing and exploring this language matters, not so people 'stay in their lane' but so expectations are clearer, contributions are recognised, and everyone understands how they can play a part in enabling change. Different roles bring different perspectives, strengths and responsibilities, and clarity helps create the conditions for more effective collaboration and ownership across organisations. A big thank you to Victoria Weaver and Frankie Tomlinson for providing the stimulus for such a thoughtful discussion today - and to Laura Langshaw for bringing us together. I’d be interested to hear from others: What change roles exist in your organisation, and how do you describe them? #changeleadership #transformation #highereducation #thefutureofwork

This year, undergraduate students in the UK are happier. So what’s changed? The latest Student Academic Experience Survey (SAES), produced by the Higher Education Policy Institute and Advance HE and supported by online fieldwork delivered by Savanta, reveals a more positive picture of university life than many might expect: 📈 Value for money perceptions are at their highest level in over a decade 🎓 Two-thirds of students are happy with their choice of course and institution 💼 Teaching quality scores have improved across almost every measure 🤝 But belonging remains a challenge: only 20% strongly feel they belong at their institution In a new blog post, Vicky Irwin FCIM, Senior Director at Savanta, explores what’s driving these trends – and what they mean in practice for universities. 🔗 Link in comments

So apparently, we’re calling middle managers “player-coaches” or “org leads”? As per Business Insider. What’s happening is that AI is flattening the traditional corporate hierarchy, a phenomenon seen at META and Block to handle the coordination tasks previously handled by managers. Oops. ...It's a fascinating shift, and one worth taking seriously - even if, for us, the answer looks very different. BIMM University is built on personal contact. On leaders who know their students by name, who can spot talent and self-doubt in equal measure, who show up - physically, emotionally, creatively. Maybe the "player-coach" idea isn't so new after all: great creative education has always worked that way. Curious to hear from other industries, too. "Pass the ball team" :)

The final plenary talked about the University of Exeter's five key capabilities for successful change projects: -Alignment of the senior team -Established leadership cascade -One framework of delivery with local freedom -Strong central co-ordination -Internal change capabilities. With conference host and the university's Registrar and Secretary, Mike Shore-Nye explaining that ‘culture and the quality of engagement with people is critical to the quality and impact of change projects’. Another AHEP conference has come to a close. This year marked the first online event since the pandemic, and while I missed the in-person interactions, the content was great. Some highlights include: - loads of discussions around AI, both in support and opposition. The reality is that AI is already integrated into our lives, and it's crucial that we learn to use it responsibly to ensure it adds value. - Extensive conversations about "change"(whatever that means) and its implications for professional services. One thing is clear: the sector must evolve, and I am eager to be part of that transformation. - I had the opportunity to present a session with Linda Spinks on the intersection of Lean and Change Management. We are already planning our next collab. Kudos to AHEP - Association of Higher Education Professionals for a successful conference.
