Inspiring conversations. Thank you to the Union Cycliste Internationale team for welcoming us and for a rich exchange on how cycling can lead the way in protecting nature. It’s always a pleasure to connect with our members in person. We look forward to continuing to support the UCI on its Sports for Nature Framework implementation journey, and to working together to inspire more of the cycling world to protect and restore nature. #SportsForNature #Cycling #Sustainability #Biodiversity
🌱🚲 Sports for Nature × UCI We were pleased to welcome representatives of the Sports for Nature Framework to the UCI World Cycling Centre. Together, we are exploring how we can strengthen collaboration to protect nature and reinforce its importance across our sport. As a member of Sports for Nature, the UCI is eager to start using the Framework’s Nature Action Tool and encourage our stakeholders to join the initiative, use its resources, and engage in valuable exchanges with the wider community committed to sustainability. At the UN Biodiversity #COP17Armenia, Sports for Nature joined the high-level panel at the Nature Positive Pavilion celebrating International Snow Leopard Day, hosted by the Kyrgyz Republic, the GSLEP Secretariat and the Snow Leopard Trust. Representing Sports for Nature, Trevor Sandwith, Director of the IUCN Centre for Conservation Action, explored how sport, culture and leadership can drive action for snow leopards and the mountain ecosystems they depend on. Mountain sports take place in snow leopard habitat, giving athletes, events and fans both a stake in its protection and a powerful voice to call for it. The discussion highlighted how healthy mountains sustain wildlife, local communities and outdoor sport, and why protecting them matters for future generations. To celebrate International Snow Leopard Day this 23 October, take part in #23for23 by doing 23 minutes of physical activity to support snow leopards and the mountains they call home. #COP17 #SnowLeopardDay #SportsForNature #NaturePositive
SNOW LEOPARDS NEED POLICY ACTION AT COP17 The world needs to take action for nature. The theme for COP17 in Yerevan couldn't have been more apt. Conservation happens on the ground, but the policies that empower and fund that work are being decided right now at COP17 in Yerevan. To protect the snow leopard, we must bridge the gap between global biodiversity targets and grassroots reality. This week, alongside the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP), we explored how sports, culture, and high-level leadership can mobilize millions for mountain biodiversity. Dr. Koustubh Sharma, our Director of Global Partnerships and GSLEP’s International Coordinator, helped guide that dialogue. Now, we are turning that momentum into concrete policy action. Tomorrow, October 23, International Snow Leopard Day, Snow Leopard Trust, GSLEP, and the Ethical Conservation Alliance (ECA) will formally launch four policy advisories. Developed with support and input from range-country officials and experts, they provide practical guidance to support National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to: • Manage wildlife-caused damage through community-first solutions. • Scale conservation-linked enterprises to support equitable benefit-sharing. • Embed the economic value of high-altitude ecosystems and freshwater into national planning. • Place Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLCs) at the center of landscape monitoring and management. Join us as we connect grassroots realities with the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. 🗓 When: Friday, October 23 at 15:00 📍 Where: Spitak, Side-event Room 2, COP17, Yerevan 🔗 Details: https://lnkd.in/gapxsPYz #SnowLeopard #COP17 #Biodiversity #EthicalConservation #CommunityLedConservation #MountainConservation #23for23

How can a football club identify where it can make the greatest difference for nature? AlUla Sports Club worked with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to assess how the club’s operations affect and depend on nature. The findings helped shapea Biodiversity Action Plan and a five-year roadmap for 2026–2030. The collaboration is also helping staff learn about biodiversityand introducing young people to AlUla’s unique biodiversity through football. How can we keep sport playable in a changing climate? We're already seeing how extreme heat, flooding and unpredictable weather are affecting where and how we play. Protecting and restoring nature can help sports organisations build resilience and adapt to these growing challenges. On 14 October, Sports for Nature joined Brussels Climate Week for the official side event, "Sustainability in Sports". Jana Janotova, representing the Sports for Nature team at the session "Keeping Sport Playable: Climate Risk & Adaptation" explored, alongside Matthew Campelli and Jeff Webb, how the sports sector can respond to climate risks and help secure a more resilient future for sport. We were excited to connect with other speakers and attendees working towards a more sustainable future for sport and nature. #BrusselsClimateWeek

For World Rowing, understanding biodiversity meant looking beyond environmental data. At a youth event in Trakai, Lithuania, a pilot assessment brought together online data, local researchers, NGOs and experts to build a clearer picture of how the event interacted with its natural surroundings. The process uncovered insights that standard datasets on their own could not provide, along with an important lesson about when biodiversity assessments should begin. Swipe to see what World Rowing learned, and find all of the case studies in this series on our website. https://lnkd.in/dA8p6fWh
