Winter conferences season is upon us and clearly Phil Goldfeder is not hiding his enthusiasm for #Utah in February! Before we let him hit the slopes, Phil will be joining the mainstage with Renaud Laplanche, Co-Founder and CEO of our member Upgrade, Inc. for an exciting conversation about the evolution of online lending and fintech! Special thanks to the great Ryan Christiansen and The University of Utah Fintech Center for this great event and the opportunity to join with so many of our members and the biggest names in #Fintech! To clear up any confusion: conference season begins in January and ends in December, don’t let anyone tell you different!

Looking forward to welcoming Renaud Laplanche to the Fintech Retreat this January. Renaud has built companies across multiple fintech cycles — from co-founding LendingClub to leading Upgrade, Inc.— and brings a rare operator’s perspective on scale, credit, and long-term execution. Fintech Retreat is designed for conversations that don’t happen on stages. Having Renaud in the room means candid dialogue about building category defining companies and how leaders adapt when the market shifts. Consumer FinTech Leader: Upgrade, Inc.’s Renaud Laplanche speaks with RJ Lumba Credit cards remain one of the most expensive and persistent forms of consumer debt, built around revolving balances and long repayment timelines. For years, fintech focused on proving it could compete with banks product by product. The next challenge has been designing credit that works across a consumer’s full financial life. That evolution is reflected in how Renaud Laplanche built Upgrade. After helping pioneer marketplace lending, Laplanche moved toward a multi-product model that connects everyday spending with longer-term borrowing. Upgrade combines checking accounts, cards, and installment loans so customers can manage routine expenses and major purchases within a single platform. One example is Upgrade’s card structure, which allows users to choose between paying immediately or spreading payments over time at the point of purchase. The goal is consolidation: fewer accounts, clearer visibility into spending, and repayment terms that reflect how consumers actually use credit. On the funding side, Upgrade works with a wide mix of banks, credit unions, and institutional buyers, matching different capital appetites to different borrower profiles. That flexibility has supported more than $42 billion in loans across 7.5 million customers. As fintech matures, the question is less about access and more about structure. Upgrade’s approach reflects where consumer finance may be headed next. Listen on iTunes (https://lnkd.in/gJJcqjdi); also available on Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Our Texas team members spent the day volunteering with Mission Arlington / Mission Metroplex, dedicating their afternoon to sorting food and organizing the pantry in preparation for Thanksgiving dinner distributions. 🦃 We're proud of the team for coming together, lending a hand, and supporting families in the community as they prepare for the holidays.
