The logic seemed airtight: Dijkstra sorts vertices by distance. Sorting has a lower bound of O(n log n). Therefore shortest paths can't be faster. 5 researchers just proved the assumption wrong. The trick: combine Dijkstra's priority queue with Bellman-Ford's dynamic programming. Divide and conquer on vertex sets. Shrink the frontier. Result: O(m log^(2/3) n) First improvement for directed graphs since Fibonacci heap in 1987. Tsinghua. Stanford. Max Planck. 17 pages.

Carlos Eduardo Pontual Castro reagiu a issoCarlos Eduardo Pontual Castro reagiu a issoOver the past 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping build Pluto TV, and later Paramount+, from scrappy experiments into leading streaming services reaching audiences around the globe. Now, I’m handing the torch to the next wave of leaders and taking a pause to rest, focus on my health (with some serious marathon training), and spend more time with my family before eventually jumping into whatever comes next. Twelve years in this seat, from two engineers and me coding and gap-filling to ultimately leading thousands, have reinforced a few lessons that may be useful to fellow founders, product leaders, and engineers. From hacking to systems: early on you can survive on hustle; at scale, the systems you build across architecture, org design, and culture quietly determine your ceiling and speed. Translating vision into reality: vision and KPIs are the easy part; the real work is designing the translation layer from “strategy on a slide” to how people actually work day to day, and treating that translation as a product problem. Culture as the scaling layer: roadmaps change, but culture is what lets you keep shipping when plans do not survive contact with reality; leaders embody the culture in their actions; in how they treat people, design tenets and practices, and shape the hours their teams spend together. Shortening cycle times: when it takes months for an idea to reach users, engagement dies and the market moves on, so the real lever is evolving the system so feedback from customers and from your own people flows quickly and influences action. Letting go of hero mode: many of us start as hands‑on builders, but leadership begins when you stop being the hero and start building the conditions and trust for others to do the work as well or better than you. Influence over authority: in matrixed environments, you rarely get to simply tell people what to do, so the work lives in the conversations between meetings, understanding what different teams value, and using influence and negotiation, not just process, to unblock the system. Inner work as part of the job: fear, imposter syndrome, and old patterns do not disappear with a new title, and coaching plus honest feedback and deliberate practice are what allow you to keep showing up more authentically and effectively over time. Design for health and family: long runs of 14‑hour days can build things you’re proud of, but they also come with a cost, so a sustainable career means creating moments for health, learning, and being present with the people who matter most. I’m incredibly proud of what our teams have accomplished and confident they’ll continue to find new ways to push the industry forward. While this transition is unexpected, I’m grateful for the opportunity to have worked on products that reach millions of users — including leading key initiatives that enhanced the Pluto TV and Fire TV experience including their new Vega OS! Over the past few years, I’ve focused on building scalable, user-centric streaming experiences, driving cross-platform feature parity, and collaborating with engineering, design, and data teams to deliver measurable impact. I’m proud of the outcomes we achieved — from improving user engagement and retention to launching new discovery and personalization features. I’m now actively seeking Product Manager opportunities where I can continue to build products that delight users and scale globally — ideally in consumer tech, streaming, or digital media. I try to lead in a similar way by staying hands on with the details while keeping sight of and evolving the broader vision for my team and organization. How do you amplify the voices of others around you? I believe it’s my job as a leader and team member to bring out the best in those around me. This means I’m actively listening, actively connecting dots, encouraging curiosity and facilitating problem solving. I really enjoy supporting and helping those around me win and grow. Where do you find energy and inspiration outside the office? I’ve rediscovered exercise and physical fitness. Working a desk job for several decades has taken a toll on my body and rediscovering my love for sport has been nothing short of reinvigorating. It was an incredibly rough start, but I now play badminton, ride, run, walk and row to build up my energy reserves, clear my mind and discover inspiration. At last week I saw important news about the INSS in Brazil and I wanted to share a quick summary with you. Basically, the National Social Security Institute agencies were closed for in-person service on January 28, 29, and 30. Also, the Meu INSS app and the 135 phone line won't work from the night of the 27th until February 1st. Why? Because Dataprev is doing a big update to the systems to make them more secure and efficient. As someone interested in technology, I think turning off everything for days is a bit outdated. Usually, big companies use a strategy called Canary Releases to avoid this kind of blackout. Here is how it works simply: You deploy the new version to a very small subset of your infrastructure. You then route only 5% to 10% of your users to the new version. You monitor the logs for errors. If everything looks good, you slowly increase the percentage until 100% of users are on the new version. It limits the blast radius. If there is a critical bug, only a small fraction of your users are affected. What do you think? Is it possible to update such a big system without turning it off?
