Episode three of Advocates in Action Season 11 is here! 🎙️ In this episode, Esther Lucero from the Seattle Indian Health Board shares how her organization calls patients “relatives,” why keeping families together is essential to healing, and how reconnecting people with their cultural identity can help address generations of trauma. This conversation is a moving reminder that real change happens when communities honor their strengths, learn from those who came before them, and come together to create a healthier future for generations to come. This National Nonprofit Day, we're celebrating the individuals who inspire us every single day—the patients who trust us during their most challenging moments, including Hersey, Sarita, and Nancy. We've had the privilege of walking alongside people facing high healthcare costs, helping them find financial assistance, navigate complex systems, and access the care they deserve. Each story reminds us that behind every application, every phone call, and every case is a person who needs someone in their corner. Thank you for standing with us and supporting our mission to help patients navigate, access, and afford the care they need. Together, we're making a difference, one patient at a time 💙

Navigating care for SMA can be complex, and we believe financial barriers should never stand in the way of treatment. If you or someone you know is living with SMA, we're here to help through our SMA TotalAssist funds. Learn more at the link in our comments ⬇️

If you're applying for a TotalAssist grant on behalf of your patient, here's what you need to know about diagnosis verification: 💊 For pharmacies applying on behalf of a patient, you'll need to submit supporting documentation that includes patient information, diagnosis details, treating physician name, and medication information. You can upload this during the application process or fax it using the patient-specific cover sheet found in the portal. 🥼 For providers completing an application, you'll sign an attestation confirming the patient's diagnosis and treatment plan. If we reach out directly regarding an application the patient submitted, simply complete and return the Diagnosis Verification Form we fax to you. ✅ Approved patients can submit claims for covered expenses while verification is in process. Have more questions? Explore our diagnosis verification help center article at the link in our comments.

Patient Advocate Foundation reposted this
On August 4, National Patient Advocate Foundation joined more than 30 patient advocacy organizations in the Partnership to Protect Coverage's Public Statement urging Congress to closely oversee implementation of H.R. 1's changes to Medicaid, citing concerns that federal funding cuts and new administrative requirements set to start on January 1 could jeopardize coverage and care for millions of patients with serious and chronic health conditions. We remain deeply concerned about the imposition of Medicaid work requirements and restrictive rulemaking regarding eligibility exceptions. These threats to affordability and healthcare access, alongside strategic advocacy steps to address them, will be the featured topic of NPAF's September 30 Policy Consortium.
