There is a lot of noise today about a global credit-rating agency upgrading Airtel and how that “crowns Airtel with a clear advantage.” A credit upgrade is good news for any company. It signals financial stability. But it does not decide leadership in India’s telecom market. If we are talking about real advantage, the numbers continue to point in one direction. Jio is still adding the highest number of customers month after month. People vote with their choice, and more users are choosing Jio than any other operator. That isn’t a coincidence. Jio’s leadership isn’t limited to mobility. The company is scaling rapidly in home broadband, 5G and fixed-wireless access. While others are catching up, Jio is defining the pace of growth. The value delivered per customer is also stronger. Affordable plans, wider 4G and 5G coverage and a robust digital ecosystem have made Jio the preferred network across metros, towns and rural India. Credit ratings measure the past. Customer behaviour and technology adoption decide the future. If the discussion is about who has the real advantage today and who is shaping the future of connectivity in India, the answer is still clear. Jio is not just participating in the telecom industry. My Think-Tank article titled “Getting India’s 6 GHz spectrum policy right - The Case for a balanced Framework” , featured in the Communications Today’s latest edition . India’s decision on the 6 GHz band is not just about spectrum allocation, it is about shaping the long-term architecture of the digital economy. As demand for high-capacity, low-latency connectivity accelerates, 6Ghz has emerged as one of the most strategically important mid band. Getting the 6 GHz policy right will be critical for innovation, inclusion, and future readiness. The article argues for a balanced framework, with licence-exempt use in the lower 6 GHz band to support affordable Wi-Fi access, alongside licensed IMT deployment in the upper band to ensure mobile network capacity and investment certainty. While NFAP-25 establishes a clear long-term orientation for IMT, timely follow-through on licence-exempt access in the lower 6 GHz band will be essential to avoid slowing the evolution of India’s Wi-Fi ecosystem. Building telecom networks in cities is one thing. Connecting remote terrains like Marwah in Jammu & Kashmir is another. Good to see airtel making this possible. Some key highlights: • First operator to bring mobile connectivity to the remote Marwah region • Connects an important corridor between Kishtwar and Anantnag • Bridges a 150 km stretch that earlier had no telecom coverage • Supports local communities and security forces with reliable communication access • Opens new possibilities for tourism and local economic activity This is where Airtel continues to lead the way in connecting some of the most remote parts of India. #Airtel

India’s broadband subscriber base crossed the landmark of 100 crore (1 billion) in November 2025, representing a major milestone in the country’s digital connectivity journey. Reliance Jio continues to lead the market with around 51 crore subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel with approximately 31.42 crore, while Vodafone Idea and BSNL account for smaller shares. Wireless broadband forms the bulk of connections, with fixed-line broadband remaining relatively limited. Over the past decade, broadband subscriptions have expanded more than six-fold, growing from about 13.15 crore in 2015, highlighting the rapid adoption of internet services across both urban and rural India.
