Making 1800RESPECT accessible
1800RESPECT is a counselling, information and support service for anyone in Australia. To ensure the service is as accessible as possible, the website has been designed with inclusive access in mind.
- If you are blind or have low vision, a screen reader can read the text on the website
- There is information on domestic, family and sexual violence in 29 languages
- 1800RESPECT is accredited with the Communication Access Symbol. This means we provide tailored support to people with communication difficulties
- The 1800RESPECT Disability Support Toolkit has resources for frontline workers who support people with disability affected by domestic and family violence.
1800RESPECT channels
There are four ways you can contact a 1800RESPECT counsellor. Choose the option that works best for you. You can visit:

National Relay Service
I find it difficult to hear or speak, how can I access your service?
If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech difficulties, you can contact us via online chat or SMS.
You can also call us through the National Relay Service (NRS) in two easy steps:
- Contact the NRS. Call numbers and access points are on the NRS website.
- Give NRS the 1800RESPECT telephone number 1800 737 732.
Relay Officers are specially trained staff who help with every call. Relay Officers will:
- Change voice to text or text to voice
- Change Auslan to English or English to Auslan
- Stay on the line throughout the call to help you, without getting in the way or changing what is said.
While the NRS has a Video Relay service, please note that it cannot be used with 1800RESPECT’s video call service. Third parties can join 1800RESPECT’s video call service via audio only.
Translating and Interpreting Service
I need an interpreter or translator, how can I access your service?
You can use the telephone Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) to speak to a Counsellor at 1800RESPECT. It is free of charge.
To arrange an interpreter:
- Call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 and ask for an interpreter. The counsellor will make the arrangements.
- Call TIS on 131 450 and ask them to contact 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732. You can visit the TIS website for more information.
- Video call 1800RESPECT and ask for an interpreter. The counsellor will make the arrangements. The interpreter will join via audio only.
Currently, our SMS and online chat channels are only available in English. Some devices use text to voice services or provide text to text translation. Each device is different, please find information relevant to the device you are using online.
1800RESPECT apps
1800RESPECT has two apps that you can download.
- Daisy is a free app that provides information about support services in your local area
- Sunny is a free app with information and resources for people with disability. It can support you if you have experienced violence and abuse. The app was co-designed by people with disability to make sure it provides the best support for those who use it.
Both apps can be downloaded on Android and Apple devices.
