Does Body Count Actually Matter?

It's a question everyone asks: What's your body count? What they really want to know is how experienced you are, and depending on what you say, they'll probably have some assumptions to make. But does body count matter? Does it make you any better or worse at sex? Is it a red flag or a green flag? We asked dating and romantic experts to weigh in:

  • Dating coach John Keegan says, "No, I think [body counts are] sort of a strange way to look at something, like you'd want to control someone's past behavior before you ever met them."[1]
  • Dating coach Hayley Quinn explains, "Does sex on the date ruin your chances of having a relationship with that person? No. But, if you have sex on the first date, do you know much about them? No. Does this mean that there are a lot of variables that could happen afterwards? Yes. Are you comfortable with the risk of not knowing them afterwards? Yes or no? And that will help you to define whether having intimacy early on in a relationship is a good thing for you."[3]
  • Dating and relationship coach Donna Barnes says, "I think anytime you have too many parameters on anything, you can miss somebody who could be really perfect for you because you're just being superficial about it."[4]
