Is Gaydar Real? Finding Other Gays In the Wild
"Gaydar" is a fun way to describe the sixth sense that many queer people have that helps them identify other gay and queer people around them. It's kind of like a survival mechanism. And no, straight people don't have it, even if they think they can tell if someone is gay. Even broken clocks are right twice a day! For the rest of us, we talked to sexuality and queer experts about recognizing and finding gay people near you:
- Licensed social worker and LGBTQ+ identity expert Zoe Stoller says, "You really can't look at somebody and know for sure. You might be able to more so intuit if they are engaging in queer community or queer spaces, but even then, who knows?"[1]
- Teen life coach Cyndy Etler says, "A lot of [finding other gay people] is to kind of trust your gut and be tuned in to subtle cues," and to stay away from people making homophobic comments, and not to assume they're homophobic because they're secretly gay.[2]
- Professional therapist Moshe Ratson, MFT, PCC, says to never assume someone is gay, and that when in doubt, you can just ask them straightforwardly.[3]
- LGBTQIA+ activist and educator NV Gay advises us to "never ever ever ever ever ever say the statement, 'Honey, I already knew you were gay,'" since it can be a backhanded and confusing for those who are still exploring their sexuality.[4]
