A short visitor's guide to Thornham, Norfolk: things to do, places to eat and drink, and what's on through the year.
Thornham is a small north Norfolk village set on the coast seven kilometres north-east of Hunstanton, within the North Norfolk Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village sits on a tidal inlet at the edge of the salt marshes, connected to the wider network of creeks and channels that stretch towards Brancaster and the open sea.
Visitors come for the marshland walks, the exceptional birdwatching across the tidal flats, and the good-value pubs and restaurants clustered around the village core. It is a quieter alternative to Hunstanton and a popular base for exploring the coast between Holme next the Sea and Brancaster.
The village itself is small, but Shirley Carnt is a gallery operating from a Coastguard Cottage on The Green, showing original work from a local artist. It is the sort of low-key drop-in that fits a slow afternoon walk through the village.
Thornham has two pubs and both are well above average for a village of its size. The Lifeboat Inn on Ship Lane is the classic country pub: open fires, locally sourced food and rustic rooms. It has been drawing visitors to this corner of Norfolk for decades and comfortably holds its own against anything on the north coast. The Chequers on the High Street takes a slightly more polished approach: a 16th-century building with modern boutique rooms, a contemporary menu and a free breakfast for guests.
The Drove Orchards site just outside the village on the Thornham Road has become one of the most talked-about food destinations on the north Norfolk coast, with several operators sharing the space. Eric's Fish & Chips has over two thousand reviews and is the headline name here: superb fish and chips served in a converted farm building. Alongside it, Eric's Pizza runs a yurt restaurant with hand-stretched dough, antipasti and a dog-friendly welcome inside and out. NOPA adds a wood-fired Mexican-Japanese fusion menu, powered by Gurney's Fishmongers. Rounding out the site, The Old Store Thornham is a bakery and brunch spot serving coffee, sourdough and burgers.
Mims at Drove Orchards is a well-rated ice cream shop on the same farm site as the Thornham restaurants, a good stop after a walk across the marshes.
