About Tamar Valley

The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is the inland, wooded river border between Devon and Cornwall, and the Devon bank holds a small, quiet share of the county's holiday cottages. This is steep oak woodland, old quays and former copper mines rather than seaside, designated in 1995 and covering about 190 square kilometres of the Tamar, Tavy and Lynher valleys. On the Devon side it takes in around 72 of the self-catering cottages along the river.

The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Designated in 1995 and now branded as the Tamar Valley National Landscape, this is one of the smaller protected landscapes of its kind, covering about 190 square kilometres along the river border between Devon and Cornwall; the part on this page lies in Devon. It follows the wooded valleys of three rivers, the Tamar, the Tavy and the Lynher, where steep oak woods fall to a tidal river that was once a busy working waterway. This was market-gardening and mining country, and much of the Devon side sits within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It remains a lived-in valley of small villages, orchards and old quays rather than open moor, with the river running quietly through the middle of it.

Where to stay in the Tamar Valley AONB

The cottages are spread through the riverside parishes and the old mining villages on the Devon bank, well inland from the sea:

  • Tavistock: the handsome stannary town on the eastern edge of the valley, with its pannier market and Abbey remains, the main base on the Devon side
  • Bere Alston: a village on the peninsula between the Tamar and the Tavy, on the branch railway down to the river
  • Bere Ferrers: a smaller riverside village further down the same peninsula, with a station beside the water
  • Buckland Monachorum: a village near the Tavy, close to the National Trust house and gardens at Buckland Abbey
  • Yelverton: a village on the moorland edge above the valley, handy for both the Tamar woods and Dartmoor

The restored river port of Morwellham Quay sits on the Devon bank too, although it is a visitor attraction rather than a place with cottages of its own.

Landscape and landmarks

The valley itself is the landmark: a deep, wooded, tidal river winding between Devon and Cornwall, fed by the Tavy and the Lynher as well as the Tamar. On the Devon bank, Morwellham Quay preserves a Victorian copper port and mine as an open-air museum, where you can ride into the hillside on the old mine railway. Across the water rises the Calstock viaduct, the elegant concrete arch that carries the Tamar Valley railway high over the river, while Cotehele, the National Trust Tudor house and quay, faces the Devon shore from the Cornish side. The engine houses, chimneys and overgrown workings scattered through the woods are why the valley forms part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape, the World Heritage Site that tells the story of copper and tin mining in the South West.

Walking the Tamar Valley

The long-distance route here is the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail, which links the woods, orchards and old mining villages on both banks of the river, so a cottage on the Devon side puts you within easy reach of it. This is inland walking, not the coast path: shaded riverside paths, steep climbs through oak woodland and quiet field lanes, with the tidal Tamar below and old engine houses standing among the trees. From Bere Alston and Bere Ferrers you can walk down to the water, and the Tamar Valley railway makes it easy to walk out and ride home.

Good to know before you book

What is the Tamar Valley AONB? It is the protected landscape, designated in 1995, that follows the wooded valleys of the Tamar, Tavy and Lynher rivers along the Devon and Cornwall border. It covers about 190 square kilometres of inland river country, and this page covers the Devon part of it.

Which Devon villages are in the Tamar Valley? On the Devon bank, Tavistock, Bere Alston, Bere Ferrers, Buckland Monachorum and Yelverton all sit within or beside the AONB. Morwellham Quay and Buckland Abbey are among the best-known places to visit.

Are there beaches in the Tamar Valley? No. This is an inland river valley rather than a stretch of coast, so it is about wooded walks, the tidal Tamar, old quays and mining history rather than beaches. For Devon beaches you would head to the coast elsewhere in the county.
