Amelia Arvesen is a Portland, Oregon-based journalist and contributing editor to Outside’s gear team. She runs, camps, climbs, hikes, and very casually bikes—and has written about each kind of activity in some form or another over the years. She took up sewing as a hobby in 2021, which has given her a deeper appreciation for how gear is made and the materials behind it.
Amelia is also a contributor to Backpacker, Field Mag, Trails, Via Magazine, Dwell, and elsewhere. She writes the Substack newsletter Honing Her Craft where she writes more about style, textiles, the outdoors, and the behind the scenes of her misadventures.
Favorite pieces she’s written for Outside include sweating with strangers at a sauna festival, surviving as a USA-made company, and overcoming fear by running with her dog.
