PC-485 served the Navies of the United States and South Korea
PC-461 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 1 May 1941 by the Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp., Morris Heights, NY
  • Launched 20 December 1941
  • Commissioned USS PC-485, 23 April 1942
  • Decommissioned in January 1947 at Astoria, Oregon and laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group
  • Transferred to South Korea in January 1952 and named ROK Han Ra San (PC 705)
  • Sunk in the inner harbor at Guam by Typhoon Karen in November 1962 along with the Philippine Navy ship RPS Negros Oriental (PS 26), ex-PC-1563
  • The vessels were sunk in water too deep for conventional salvage with the equipment they had at their disposal. The floating dry dock AFDL-21 was positioned over the wreck in fully raised position.
    Lifting slings were rigged and the dry dock flooded. The slings were tightened and the dock pumped out lifting the hulk off the bottom
  • It was towed to a shallow area and set on the bottom where it was floated and sold for scrap in 1964.

  • Propulsion: Two 1,440bhp Fairbanks Morse 38D8 1/8 diesel engines (Serial No. 832223 and 832224), Westinghouse single reduction gear, two shafts.

    ONE SUBCHASER FOLLOWS ANOTHER--As the submarine chaser PC485 slipped into the Harlem River today, the keel for another one, the PC563, was lowered into place at the Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp. yards. The Navy is building the sub-chasers at a cost of about $1,000,000 each to intensify its drive against enemy U-boats.
