Biodiversity indicators are essential for tracking progress towards international biodiversity goals, but existing indicators have important shortcomings and are not based on animal movement data. This Perspective outlines why incorporating movement data into biodiversity indicators can help to address these shortcomings, improve monitoring and inform effective conservation actions.

The loss of genetic diversity is a major threat to population resilience, posing a challenge for conservation efforts. This Review highlights how the integration of large-scale biodiversity monitoring datasets and population genetics principles can empower biodiversity partners across governance levels to make effective conservation decisions.

The default use of English limits participation by non-native English speakers in international conferences. Ecological resurveys involve returning to sampling sites that were initially surveyed in historical expeditions. Rather than repeating colonialist practices, tropical resurveys can be reimagined to recognize and elevate contributions by local communities and scientists, and ideally catalyse long-term, community-led monitoring efforts to reduce reliance on episodic resurveys in the future.
