Active battery management systems (ABMS) transform battery diagnostics from passive monitoring to active, information-centric sensing. By applying active pulse excitations over millisecond-to-second timescales, they elicit multi-scale electrochemical responses, enabling efficient, high information-density feature extraction and enhanced mechanistic observability. This comment provides a forward-looking perspective on how this approach improves diagnostic speed, accuracy, and cross-domain generalization, establishing a unified ABMS framework across the full lifecycle and supporting efficient, clean energy systems.
Heat pumps decarbonize the building sector, yet their high capital costs relative to gas boilers remain a barrier to widespread adoption. This comment emphasizes that optimal heat pump system design requires selecting a heat pump that minimizes total costs rather than defaulting to oversized, monovalent configurations. For this choice, the seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) is vital. However, we demonstrate that existing design standards and product energy classifications systematically overestimate real-world SCOP by neglecting controller interactions, cycling losses, and defrost effects in the standardized test procedure. To overcome this issue, manufacturers could publish more measurements, including dynamic time series. Then, planners could use advanced models to create optimal design procedures and help end users find the best heat pump choice at minimal costs. Furthermore, research and manufacturers should focus on determining the minimum number of measurements necessary for accurate SCOP predictions, for example, by employing optimal experimental design.
Energy justice frameworks overlook how space creates inequality. Whilst examining distribution, participation and recognition, they miss that geography itself is a mechanism of injustice. These spatial strategies transform renewable energy into tools of exclusion. Just transitions demand interrogating how distance, territory and infrastructure actively produce injustice, not merely host it.
