How tobacco builds nicotine
Nicotine is among the most consequential of plant alkaloids, yet how tobacco joins its two nitrogen-containing rings has gone unsolved for over a century. Two new studies complete the pathway, revealing that the central bond is forged only after a cryptic glucosylation that activates nicotinic acid and the added glucose is stripped away once its work is done.
