South Monroe Historic District Logo and Sign Update Seeks Public Input

City of Monroe News Posted on February 25, 2026

The City of Monroe is launching an effort to update the South Monroe Historic District’s logo and install new, more visible signs throughout the neighborhood. Guided by the Historic District Commission, the project will refresh the district’s visual identity while honoring its history and continued growth.

Why the Update?

The current logo was created in the 1980s. It features a historic gas lamp with the slogan “Reflections of the past light the way to the future.” While that message remains meaningful, many of the district’s physical signs are aging and in some cases difficult to see or read.

The district has continued to evolve over time. In recent years, renewed private investment has led to thoughtful renovations, increased owner occupancy, and a resurgence of pride among residents.

The branding effort aims to harness this momentum by creating a visual identity that celebrates both the district’s historic roots and its future potential as a welcoming place to live, visit, and invest.

Public Engagement and Next Steps

Public input will shape the new logo and sign designs. The City will gather feedback through:

  • Online SurveyAn initial survey is available now for community members to share ideas and impressions that will guide logo and signage concepts. Take the survey now.
  • Public Workshop: On March 25, 2026, the City will host an in-person workshop at the Dowd Center Theatre (120 S Main Street) from 4 to 7 p.m. Attendees can review survey results, share feedback, and engage with staff and other residents. Light refreshments and raffles will be offered.

Additional outreach details and updates will be shared throughout 2026.

What’s Ahead

Once established, new branding will be applied to cohesive signage that strengthens the South Monroe Historic District’s presence and identity. This work supports broader revitalization efforts, enhancing wayfinding, neighborhood pride, and the sense of place along streets and entry points throughout the district.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to participate in shaping this refreshed look. To receive updates, sign up for the project mailing list.
