About MTI’s Welding Programs
MTI offers two welding training options: the 7-month welding program and 10-month welding and pipefitting program. Both programs are offered at all of MTI’s campus locations in Missouri and Illinois.

7-month Welding Program
- Campus: Available at all MTI campuses
- Length: 7 months (30 weeks); 720 clock hours / 180 additional outside clock hours
- Class Schedule: Daytime & evening classes available
- Welding Techniques: SMAW, GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, FCAW (Flux Core)
- Pipefitting Techniques: Basic Fitting Principles
- Financial Aid: Available to all qualified students
- Job Placement Assistance: Available to all qualified graduates
10-month Welding & Pipefitting Program
- Campus: Available at all MTI campuses
- Length: 10 months (40 weeks); 960 clock hours / 240 additional outside clock hours
- Class Schedule: Daytime & evening classes available
- Welding Techniques: SMAW, GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG, FCAW (Flux Core)
- Pipefitting Techniques: Basic Fitting Principles plus 10 additional weeks of Basic and Advanced Pipe Fitting training

Welding Training Program FAQs
Welders are skilled tradespeople who play an important role in the construction and manufacture of infrastructure and products. Welders use over 100 different techniques to fuse metals and other types of materials together. They work in a diverse range of fields, constructing everything from ships and spacecraft to computers and commercial goods. In fact, welding is essential to the manufacturing of many U.S. products.
Pipe fitters are responsible for managing the repair and installation of pipes, many of which transport sensitive materials such as chemicals, acids, and gasses. They typically work within manufacturing, commercial, and industrial settings. As a pipefitter, you may consider specializing in one area, such as gasfitting, sprinkler fitting, or steamfitting. An accomplished pipefitter often exhibits good organizational skills, is proficient in math, and enjoys working with their hands.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2024, the median annual wage for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers was $51,000. According to BLS data, the highest 10 percent earned more than $75,850. Wages may vary by work experience, location, skill level, and several other factors.

MTI’s welding graduates work across the country in manufacturing, construction, and maintenance fields. They are employed as boilermakers, pipefitters, structural welders, and many other welding-related jobs. Welding job opportunities vary, depending on skill level and experience, so earning a welding education and/or certifications can help increase your employability.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 45,600 job openings for welders each year, on average, over the decade (2024-2034).
The BLS predicts about 44,000 job openings for pipefitters, plumbers, and streamfitters every year from 2024-2034.

Looking for continuing education?
MTI offers a 10-week continuing education Pipefitting Course to provide you with the fundamental principles of entry-level pipe fitting and qualify you to gain entry-level employment as a pipefitter/steamfitter.
