Update: July 3rd, 2023, TIMS Card is no longer valid for Everest Base Camp Trek

With decentralization, a new permit system has been implemented in Everest Region. You will no longer require a Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) Card. With lots of controversy and dispute, this new local entry permit has completely replaced the old trek permit in Khumbu. This article will give you complete information about the Everest Base Camp Trek Permit.

    Everest Trek Permit

Essential Permits for the Everest Base Camp Trek

Planning your Everest Base Camp Trek in 2025? Obtaining the required permits is a critical step in your preparation. Two permits are mandatory for trekking in the Everest region: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit. Below is everything you need to know about these permits and their importance.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit was introduced in 2018 to support the local government and community initiatives in the Khumbu region.

Where to Get It: Obtain this permit upon arrival in Lukla or Monjo.

Purpose: This permit helps maintain trekking trails, build infrastructure, and support sustainable development for the Sherpa community.

    Cost: NPR 2,000 per person.

Note: Additional permit is required if you trek from Jiri; more information is below.

    Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

The Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit is essential for entering the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its stunning landscapes, unique biodiversity, and iconic Mount Everest.

Where to Get It: Available in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board office or at the park’s entry checkpoint in Monjo.

Purpose: This permit funds conservation efforts to protect the park’s pristine environment, wildlife, and cultural heritage.

Cost: NPR 3,000 per person (excluding VAT) for foreign trekkers.

Additional Permit for Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek

If you are following the classic Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek, you will need to obtain an additional permit for Gaurishankar Conservation Area. This permit has to be obtained at Kathmandu in Nepal Tourism Board. This will cost NPR 3000 Per Person.

You also need permits for the Everest Base Camp Helicopter tour and the EBC trek with Heli Return.

    Why Are These Permits Necessary?

These permits play a vital role in:

    1. Sustainability: Ensuring the preservation of the Everest region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
    2. Tourism Regulation: Allowing local authorities to manage trekking activities efficiently and ensure safety.
    3. Community Support: Providing financial resources for the development of local infrastructure and the well-being of the Sherpa people.

    Required documents for trekking permits

To obtain the necessary permits for the Everest Base Camp Trek, you will need to provide specific documents. These are essential to ensure a smooth application process and avoid any delays.

    1. Passport (with photocopies):
      • Your passport must be valid, and you will need to submit photocopies along with your application.
    2. Recent Passport-Sized Photographs:
      • Carry at least 2-4 photographs. These are required for permit applications and may also be useful for other formalities during the trek.
    3. Additional Information:
      • Some applications may require details such as your intended trekking route, emergency contact information, and travel insurance details. It’s helpful to have these prepared in advance.

Note: For the organized trek, Magical Nepal will obtain all the permits for you.

Do You Need a Guide or Porter for the Everest Base Camp Trek?

As of today March 2025, you don’t need a guide and porter for the Everest Base Camp trek

While trekking solo may seem adventurous, hiring a guide or porter offers significant benefits that can significantly enhance your journey.

Benefits of Hiring a Guide or Porter

    1. Local Expertise:
      • Guides are knowledgeable about the trekking routes, weather conditions, and local culture.
      • They can provide valuable insights into Sherpa traditions, monasteries, and landmarks along the trail.
    2. Enhanced Safety:
      • Guides are trained to handle emergencies, including altitude sickness and injuries.
      • They help navigate challenging terrain, ensuring a safer trek.
    3. Logistic Convenience:
      • Porters can carry your heavy luggage, allowing you to focus on the trek without physical strain.
      • Guides handle permits, accommodation, and meal arrangements, saving you time and effort.

Hiring a guide or porter not only enhances your trekking experience but also supports the local economy by providing employment opportunities. Whether you choose a guide, a porter, or both, their assistance will make your Everest Base Camp Trek safer, more enjoyable, and stress-free.

Rules and Regulations for Trekking in Sagarmatha National Park

Trekking Rules You Must Follow in Sagarmatha National Park

Sagarmatha National Park is a protected area, and all trekkers are required to follow certain rules to preserve its pristine environment and cultural heritage. Here are the key rules:

    1. Do Not Litter:
      • Always dispose of your waste in designated bins or carry it back to the lodges for proper disposal.
    2. Respect Wildlife:
      • Avoid disturbing animals, feeding them, or damaging their natural habitats.
    3. Stay on Marked Trails:
      • Straying off designated paths can harm fragile ecosystems and increase the risk of accidents.
    4. Avoid Campfires:
      • Use only designated cooking areas and avoid lighting campfires to prevent deforestation.

    Respecting Local Culture and Nature

    1. Cultural Etiquette:
      • Always ask for permission before taking photos of locals or monasteries.
      • Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or interacting with locals.
    2. Behavior at Monasteries:
      • Remove your shoes before entering.
      • Walk clockwise around stupas or mani walls as a sign of respect.

You can no longer obtain a Sagarmatha National Park Permit from the tourism board in Kathmandu. You have to get it at Monjo, as of 2018.

      1. Pradeep Guragain Avatar

Hey Ron, I don’t think so as you can still obtain the national park entry permit in Kathmandu. Price is same whether you obtain it in Kathmandu or Monjo so it doesn’t make sense to issue national park entry permit in Kathmandu.

Is a TIMS card required or not for the EBC trek?

      1. Pradeep Guragain Avatar

You do not need TIMS Card for Everest. You will only need a local entry permit and national part entry permit. Additional you will need Gaurishankar Conservation Area Project Entry Permit if you are starting from Jiri.

      Hi Pradeep,

I am an Indian and planning for base camp solo first time in April. Please let me know the basic approval and permission requirements. I heard that Indian has exemptions compare to other nationalities. Please suggest.

      1. Pradeep Guragain Avatar

        Hi Narayan,

As an Indian you still need to obtain both permits for Everest, i.e. Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit. You will only pay cheaper.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit NPR 1500 instead of NPR 3000

I am not sure whether or not there is discounted price for Indian on Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit.

April is a good month for Everest Base Camp Trek, have a good one.

      Dear Pradeep
Is there a possibility to buy the The Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit on the way (eg Shivalaya) or only in Katmandu?
The Kumbu and Sargamata Entrance Permit – you wrote we have to by them in Monjo.

      1. Pradeep Guragain Avatar

        Hi Werner,

I am not very sure but they do have a counter in Shivalaya, NTNC office for Gaurishankar Conservation Area. You should be able to obtain the permit there, but I suggest you to check with NTNC office at Kathmandu for confirmation. This you can request your hotel to make a phone call and confirm.

        Hi James,

It is recommended to bring Nepali Rupees. Please note that you have to pay in Nepali Rupees in the teahouses for food and accommodation. They might accept USD but with less exchange rate and very very few teahouses accept card payment.

Hi i am trekking to everest base camp in december we are walking in from Jiri, so do i need to get any permits in Katmandu at all or not? just at Monjo? is it ok to start trekking without it? we were planning on doing 3 passes but would you recommend that in dec and jan with no guide?

      1. Pradeep Guragain Avatar
        Pradeep Guragain

        Hi Kristy,

If you are walking from Jiri you will need Gaurishankar Conservation Area Project Entry Permit, this you can either obtain in Kathmandu or at Shivalaya. We don’t recommend doing three passes in Jan because of the snow. You can do the trek independently and hire a local at teahouse near the pass areas (Hotel can arrange a local staff like cook or kitchen helper). They will charge bit more but it make sense to have a guide where needed rather than having it all the way from Jiri.

      Hi Pradeep,
I trekked in the Khumbu region a couple of times, always out of season and solo. This time i will be going in March. Since i love very much to trek alone i’m a bit concerned there will be a lot of people on the path most of the time. This will be the trek (allowing some improvisation): Bus to Phaplu, then Ringmo/Namche/Porthse/Ama Dablam base camp/Chuckhung/Lobuche/Gorak Shep/Dzongla/Gokyio/Thame/Phakding and back to Phaplu and Kathmandu.. You think it will be very busy everywhere, or just on the classic EBC route? One more thing: Permit Sagharmata in Monjo and no permit for the Phaplu/Namche trek right?

      1. Pradeep Guragain Avatar
        Pradeep Guragain

        Hi Jan,

March is the start of spring season, so it will start getting busier mainly in between Lukla and EBC no the side routes. You will need to obtain the local entry permit of NPR 2000. Normally people obtain this in
Lukla. Since you won’t be going through Lukla you will be getting that somewhere before Monjo.

        Have a nice trek!
