Most of us code our analyses, and Stata's DoFile Editor is where that happens. There have been significant enhancements in the last few iterations of Stata to the capabilities of this very important part of Stata. So let's have a look at that. In Stata 16, syntax highlighting was improved to cover other languages such as Python, Java, and XML, and as well auto-colorize code segments in your code for better identification. Auto-completion was introduced, which suggests completions for Stata commands and automatically closes quotes, parentheses, braces, and brackets, and this can help avoid the most common coding errors. Stata 17 introduced bookmarks, which allows you to annotate long do files, and that can help with navigation. Stata 18 introduced automatic backups and crash recovery.
