Job Description
Avery Dennison is looking for a qualified professional to step into the role of Senior Mechanical Engineer within our Hardware Development team. In this position, the selected individual will combine high-level individual design contributions with technical domain leadership for the mechanical engineering discipline—guiding mechanical architecture, mentoring junior peers, and enforcing mechanical engineering best practices across projects. Operating within both formal and informal cross-functional teams, this professional will drive the design and development of novel products, including portable and industrial thermal barcode printers, RFID solutions, wireless applications, accessories, and services while successfully managing critical milestones to align with top-line growth objectives.
In this onsite role at our Miamisburg, OH facility, your key responsibilities will be:
End-to-End Product Lifecycle & Documentation: Lead the end-to-end design, analysis, and validation of new mechanical products and sub-assemblies from initial concept through to mass production on-site at our Miamisburg, OH facility, while taking full ownership of flawless manufacturing data package delivery and assembly drawing creation.
Team Guidance, Mentorship & Milestones: Provide daily technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to less-experienced mechanical engineers to elevate technical capabilities, foster a strong team environment, and balance individual and mechanical team milestones across several concurrent projects.
Technical Excellence & Best Practices: Drive technical excellence within the discipline by establishing, maintaining, and applying mechanical engineering best practices, latest innovations, and machine shop manufacturing knowledge to all designs while providing technical recommendations for mechanical capital equipment purchases.
Architecture Planning & Review Leadership: Steer critical technical sessions, actively contributing during conceptual design and mechanical architecture planning sessions while owning the mechanical review process by leading robust design reviews to ensure outputs meet functional, economic, and specified requirements.
Simulations, Problem Solving & Communication: Oversee complex mechanical simulations (including Thermal Flow, Strain/Stress, FEA, and Torque analysis), champion methodical problem solving using structured approaches (mental models, DOE, test tools), and effectively communicate project status, architectural decisions, and risks to cross-functional teams.
Qualifications
Education & Core Experience: A university or higher education degree in Mechanical Engineering (Bachelor’s degree minimum required) paired with a minimum of 6 years of professional experience, showcasing a proven track record of acting as a technical subject matter expert, lead engineer, or technical mentor to peer colleagues.
3D Modeling & Domain Applications: Advanced mechanical design and 3D modeling experience with Solidworks or a similar tool (Pro/E experience considered a plus), with highly beneficial experience in high-volume product design, thermal printer mechanisms, paper handling systems, or related dispensing equipment.
Injection Molding & Manufacturing Documentation: Deep experience designing parts destined for injection molding alongside high proficiency in recommending/selecting materials for plastic designs, backed by expertise in drawing creation for assemblies and details utilizing a comprehensive understanding of exact dimensions and tolerances.
Technical Creativity & Motivation: Technically creative with a deep understanding of mechanical functions to provide robust, high-performance, and economical solutions, combined with strong self-motivation to independently initiate and implement tasks, strategies, and techniques to increase productivity and profitability.
Communication, Influence & Mobility: Excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrating a proven ability to independently solve complex problems, influence technical direction, lead technical colleagues, and accommodate occasional travel requirements.
