Medical Lab Technician

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree Medical technology, medical or clinical lab science, biology, chemistry or a related field. Required
  • 1 year Laboratory experience. Preferred
  • Medical Laboratory Technician - ASCP MLT(AAB), MLT(AMT) or equivalent registry also accepted. Required or
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist - California Required

Responsible for receiving specimens, confirming physician orders, obtaining the necessary information for testing specimens, preparing the specimens for testing and preparing specimens to be forwarded to other laboratories (reference laboratories). Acts as a resource person for inpatient caregivers, clinic caregivers and outreach accounts with regards to solving problems, answering questions and giving technical support. Assists the Outreach Account representative to establish positive relationships with outreach accounts. Performs bench testing in one or more areas of the laboratory to obtain data to be used in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Assists in and/or instructs other personnel and medical technologist interns.

Essential Job Duties

  • Is able to perform each of the duties listed below in accordance to hospital and regulatory guidelines and policies.
  • Anticoagulants and order of draw
  • Sterile techniques
  • Properly identifies patient and specimen.
  • Alert to possible sources or error.
  • Maintains confidentiality of test results.
  • Maintain equipment as directed by instruction manual, laboratory policy procedure manual and/or supervisor. Operate equipment properly.
  • Interprets laboratory data and reports test results. Reviews and rechecks questionable results. Documents corrected reports per laboratory protocol. Able to recognize abnormal or inconsistent results that may require specimen recollection. Reports unusual or erratic results to supervisor.
  • Calls critical results to clinics, outreach clients or inpatient nursing units; refers to departmental procedure manual for special reporting. Utilizes hospital and laboratory computer systems for ordering and reporting test results. Follows other specific laboratory computer procedures.
  • Performs and evaluates the quality control program by including appropriate quality control sample as directed per specific instrument/procedure. Evaluates the integrity of each run. Takes proper remedial action in response to test systems being out of control limits Records each quality control result as per instrument or procedure. Calculates the control mean and standard deviation for each numeric test monthly. Maintains quality control records; keep limits posted and up-to-date.
  • Complies with all policies, standards, mandatory training and requirements of Stormont Vail Health
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Medical Lab Scientist

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. Required
  • 1 year Experience performing specimen collecting or testing. Preferred
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist - ASCP Certification by AMT or NCA is also accepted. Required or
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist - California Required
  • Single discipline technologist or specialist certification in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Molecular Biology, or Microbiology may be considered depending on the position.

  • Is able to collect and test a variety of specimen and sterile techniques. Follows departmental procedure manual instructions in the event a quality control sample falls out of acceptable limits.
  • Able to report high quality, consistent and reliable results. Maintains accurate records.
  • Understands the theory involved in procedures and troubleshoots when questionable or erratic results occur. Takes proper remedial action in response to test systems being out of control limits.
  • Maintains equipment as directed by instruction manual, laboratory policy procedure manual and/or supervisor. Operates equipment properly. Thoroughly reads manual before using equipment. Knows the equipment, how it functions, what its limitations are when it is malfunctioning.
  • Reports unusual or erratic results to supervisor. Maintains quality control records; keep limits posted and up-to-date. Calculates the control mean and standard deviation for each numeric test monthly.
  • Calls critical results to clinics, outreach clients or inpatient nursing units; refers to departmental procedure manual for special reporting.
