Shayna Moon reposted thisShayna Moon reposted thisUnfortunately, last week I was impacted by the restructuring and mass layoff at Electronic Arts (EA), with roughly 400 employees let go. I’m heartbroken to be leaving, but deeply grateful for the last two years on the audio team at Ripple Effect. Helping bring Battlefield 6 to life was an incredible privilege, and I’m proud of the audio/VO work we delivered together. But what makes it truly special is the people. They are talented, generous professionals who always support each other and lift the group to the highest standards. They are also genuinely kind, endlessly patient, and always open about what they’re working on. Thank you for trusting my work and for making every day on the team feel like something to look forward to. Now I’m looking for what’s next. I love making games sound great, and also love working on film, TV, or immersive projects. If it’s creative and the audio matters, I’m interested. If you’re working on something where sound matters. Send me a message or connect here. Let’s talk!

Shayna Moon reposted thisScott is the epitome of a great designer. His funny quips and way with words would make you think he's only good at narrative stuff but I can assure you, he's a top tier problem solver and an amazing collaborator. He'd be great on any team and I'd be lucky to get to work with him again!Shayna Moon reposted thisWell folks, all good things must come to an end, and what a good thing this was. I’ve been impacted by the cuts at EA today and am unemployed for the first time in over 10 years. A pretty good run in this industry! I’m proud of the work we did on skate. and I’m hopeful about its future, but that is a future without me. I want to thank some of the many people who took a chance on me and invested in me during my time at Full Circle - Dylan Loney, Deran Chung, John Epler, and many more. I’m looking for work in Narrative, Quest, and Mission Design, and have over 10 years of experience in mobile and AAA games - drop me a line!

Shayna Moon reposted thisShayna Moon reposted thisPutting it out there again - if we worked together previously, and you've been impacted by layoffs (either at EA or elsewhere), please reach out for a recommendation and I'm happy to provide one. The best part of this job has always been the people, and I'm here to shout your praises from the rooftops (or, more accurately, write something nice about you).

Shayna Moon reposted thisShayna Moon reposted thisAfter more than 8 years with EA/Codemasters my time there comes to an end this week as I’ve been caught up in the latest round of layoffs that were announced last week. Codies gave my start in this industry which has allowed me to contribute to one of my bucket list games - one of those I’ve played since I was a kid. It’s been a great experience and I’ve grown a lot over the years but now I need to find my next step. I’m on the look out for any game production/development director or project management roles outside of the games industry and in the meantime I’ll be going for my PMP certification. Any leads anyone has that you think would suit me, please send them my way.

This is a rough example (embedded in a larger — and very very rough — "editor") and it properly provides the game sim with varying layouts and structures with physics/material information (short clip): https://lnkd.in/gq2diDeb I'll write-up a follow-up to my last article about this experiment (https://lnkd.in/g3Ai4Ung)... One of the better discussions we've had in a while. During the chat, some people shared their screens to show how they search, ended up finding roles, figured out who the recruiters and hiring managers were, and then getting actual introductions set up in real time on the call with job seekers. It was wild! Good luck to the folks who got helped. Waiting to hear how it turns out.

I'm happy to welcome Adam Orth, Charlotte Cook, and Cisco Maldonado to our Midwest Games team. As we grow the business and global opportunities to help game publishing and dev teams succeed, adding even more experienced leadership expands our capabilities in many exciting ways. Ben explains the details well in his post below, but as a final point I'll just say it is great to have this momentum and extra horsepower heading into GDC. Can't wait to talk with folks there about the opportunities that may come from partnership!

The past few weeks have been heavy. More reductions across games. Major tech companies cutting a third or more of their workforce. Friends in our industry and adjacent ones suddenly unsure what comes next. And behind every headline is a human being. What you do not see publicly is the quiet wave of messages. People asking, “Will I ever work in games again?” People wondering if this is a permanent inflection point for the labor force. People afraid not just of losing a role, but also of losing stability, identity, and the ability to provide for their families. Some approach it analytically. Some are angry. Many are exhausted. Most simply need a job. This past month has been the highest volume of inbound messages I have ever received in 3.5 years. A ton of it is just people who are afraid or sad, employed or not. That is why my content has been lighter. Shorter. More focused on direct community support than on long form analytics or commentary. When the community is hurting, the priority shifts. Less commentary. More care. I will always spend late nights responding. Connecting people. Encouraging them. Trying to offer clarity where I can and honesty where I must. An encouraging word does not fix the macroeconomics. A DM does not magically create a role. A connection does not erase uncertainty. But sometimes stability begins with not feeling alone. If you are struggling right now, you are not weak. If you are worried, you are not irrational. If you are tired, that makes sense. I will always show up for this community. That commitment does not change. But I will also be honest: lately, you can feel the weight of it everywhere. The pain is real. The fatigue is real. And still, we keep going because people deserve dignity. Thank you to every individual and every organization trying to provide even a small measure of stability in a very complex moment. We will keep showing up for each other. And I will keep doing my best, no matter what. I wish everybody cared about and invested in human beings as much as they did AI. Or even a fifth as much.

We Need To Be Careful With Layoff Numbers Right Now A widely shared GDC survey stat today, echoed by major press as a larger scale finding, suggested that one third of those surveyed, working in games in the United States, were laid off over the past two years. You all know I, of all people on planet earth, would never downplay the human cost behind games layoffs. Every job lost is a person, a family, and a life disrupted. But there is a very large gap between that figure and what I am seeing in the most comprehensive tracked datasets available, and I think that deserves a closer look. Based on the layoff tracking I maintain by region, North America saw 11,723 games layoffs two years ago and 5,638 last year. That is 17,361 total layoffs across two years. Now we have to pair that with workforce size. The most rigorous attempt I have seen to measure the games workforce comes from Game Industry Coffee Chat, which estimates a median North America games workforce of about 230,000 people: https://lnkd.in/eb_kK9BV Even if we assume every one of those 17,361 layoffs impacted a completely different person, which is unlikely since some individuals were laid off more than once, that equals roughly 8 percent of the workforce over two years. That is still deeply serious. But it is very different from one third. For one third of the workforce to have been laid off in the United States over the past two years, we would be talking about roughly 66,000 people, not 17,361. That is a difference of nearly 49,000 roles. And even if we narrow from North America to the United States only, where GICC estimates about 200,000 games workers, the percentage still lands in the same range, about 8 percent, nowhere near a third. So how do numbers get that far apart? Survey data around layoffs can skew high for many reasons. People who were directly impacted are far more likely to respond. Surveys often circulate most heavily in communities already affected. Definitions of “games industry” vary widely between respondents. Some surveys are global but get interpreted as U.S. only. Others may include contract endings, short term roles, or adjacent tech roles differently. Without tight sampling controls, surveys can end up reflecting who feels the pain most strongly rather than the full workforce picture. None of this makes the last two years any less painful. They have been among the hardest periods our industry has faced. But if we want to advocate effectively for workers, studios, and long term stability, our numbers have to be as rigorous as our empathy. Clear data helps us understand the true scale of the challenge and push for solutions that actually match reality. This is why I have always relied on direct measurement of all figures rather than anything polling or survey related, although those can also be used to calibrate if and when they align with hard data.
