Looking at DeepSeek Harness (https://lnkd.in/gtjf7ArP), and the paper behind it, "A Programming Paradigm for Spatiotemporal Composability" (https://lnkd.in/gJ-32_53). This feels very impactful, and it's changing how I look at developing code now. It's all built on what we've seen in language theory for decades, hot swaps, dependency injection, plugins. The simple idea of dynamic plugin installs and removals while still running seems powerful, and it's just what's needed. DeepSeek Harness four days after launch I already feel behind.

In his annual letter to shareholders, Satya Nadella wrote that the AI transformation “should happen with people, not to them,” growing their potential rather than replacing it. We couldn’t agree more. At Cascade Reading, our purpose is to use technology to expand the human capacity to understand, learn, and grow. We do it by reshaping text to reveal the relationships that drive meaning in every sentence. AI is dramatically expanding access to information. But more information doesn’t automatically mean more understanding. We’re building a reading layer to close that gap, so readers see more in everything they read. Reading is an invention. Like any technology, it can and should evolve to serve its core purpose: advancing human understanding. Our new web site shows what that looks like. Please take a look. www.cascadereading.com

Just got my author's copy of my new book 'The Compounding Business', its a kind of follow up to my more technical/academic first, 'The Architecture Quality Methodology'. Which is pretty heavy and is aimed more at technical leadership in enterprise. The same core value lies inside both, but in The Compounding Business, its a much lighter read focused at SMB owners and leaders, and at ~80 pages, takes about an hour or a short plane trip to get through. Yes, big corpo's can use the concepts as well. Both are free on the Kindle Unlimited platform now, because my goal really is to help other small businesses out and win; but if you get any value out of them, consider buying the books to help support me and my family. Also, if you like what's in them and need help in applying them to your business, see my company page to setup a call. https://a.co/d/0eNs74a3

One of my favourite moments from my latest DevLab conversation with Luis Hernandez. We got into something a lot of engineers run into at some point. The only way up the ladder is to become a manager, even if you love building and never wanted to run a team. Luis has a different take. On his team at Zillow the IC and management tracks have real parity, so a senior engineer can work at the level of a director or a VP without ever taking on reports. Managing people is a different job, not a more senior one. There's a lot more in the full episode, including how he got hired at big tech in Mexico, how his team uses AI day to day, and why he steers engineers toward core product over side projects. Worth a watch if you've ever felt like you had to stop coding to keep growing. Full conversation linked below.

"Let's just add AI." "We'll have the AI do that." These phrases have become reflexive across the industry. The 10x productivity narrative is everywhere. But here's the thing: AI makes architected work faster. Unarchitected work just fails faster. I wrote about my actual workflow. How I use AI for architecture planning, why full-stack visibility matters, and what I'm seeing happen to the junior-to-senior career path. The punchline: AI isn't replacing junior devs. It might be eliminating mid-level entirely. https://lnkd.in/g9TWcV_4

Minnesota’s next wave of software innovation keeps growing—and we’re excited to welcome four new companies to the MESA mentee portfolio: BioBase Maps, BettorEdge, Fulfil, and Liminal Network. At MESA, we believe great founders shouldn’t have to navigate the hardest parts of scaling alone. Our mentees are paired with seasoned C-level software executives who’ve built and scaled companies themselves—leaders who provide candid, practical guidance with 𝗻𝗼 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀. That’s the power of the MESA model: founders helping founders build stronger companies and a stronger Minnesota tech ecosystem. If you’re a Minnesota software founder or CEO looking for experienced, high-impact mentorship, we’d love to connect. https://lnkd.in/g7VdsGJY #MinnesotaTech #StartupMentorship #TechStartups #SaaSFounders #StartupCommunity #MinnesotaStartups #Entrepreneurship #MESA

In September, I had the opportunity to speak at Software Leader Engineering Summit There were many great speakers who provided a lot of homework. Here is my talk and the accompanying material. At the core of it: aiming for a balance between non non-deterministic nature of the machine and the deterministic needs of business software.
