Mark Kvamme reposted thisOhio is already the place companies go to build what's next in defense technology — and yesterday's conversation in Columbus underscored exactly why. Thank you to Assistant Secretary of War for Critical Technologies Hon Mike Dodd for visiting the state. Hon. Dodd, Senator Bernie Moreno, and Mark Kvamme of The O.H.I.O. Fund joined me for a great conversation about the next generation of defense technology — and why Ohio is the best place for companies working in the United States Department of War's critical technology areas, from applied AI and quantum to hypersonics and directed energy, to develop and scale. The foundation speaks for itself. Ohio is home to the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA Glenn Research Center, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base — our state's largest single-site employer, with nearly 40,000 military and civilian personnel and $16.6 billion in annual regional economic impact. More than 400 defense contractors and an ecosystem supporting over 550,000 jobs have grown up around that mission, and Ohio is the nation's top supplier state to both Airbus and Boeing. As always, our friends at the Ohio Chamber of Commerce were great hosts. Conversations like this one — bringing federal, state, and private capital to the same table — are exactly how Ohio keeps building the technology that will define what comes next. Mark Kvamme reposted thisMark Kvamme reposted thisA $5.6 million investment is helping expand an Ohio manufacturing platform built around acquiring and modernizing legacy industrial companies. The O.H.I.O. Fund-backed capital will support OCTAD Capital Partners as it adds OMNI Manufacturing Services, Inc in St. Marys and Die-Matic Corporation in Brooklyn Heights to a platform that already included six metal stamping companies, more than 400 employees and roughly $300 million in combined revenue. The strategy: acquire long-standing Ohio manufacturers, preserve their industrial base and invest in the systems, operations and growth needed for their next chapter. ✅ The full OTN story >> https://lnkd.in/gpkQuH68 OhioX | Ohio Tech Events

But the real winners aren't us. They're the IT teams who used to spend their weekends chasing ghost problems in the network. The employees who just want their video call to work. The CIOs who are finally getting a network that proves its own value instead of just consuming budget. That's what self-driving networks actually mean in practice. Not a slide. Not a benchmark. Networks that fix themselves before anyone notices something is wrong. Congrats to the HPE Networking team. Huge respect to Sujai and Bob. And thank you to every customer who pushed us to be better. 🙏

Mark Kvamme liked thisMark Kvamme liked thisA big thank you to Gracie Lones and Kyle Zaklan for the energy, creativity and hard work they brought to The O.H.I.O. Fund as our Marketing and Communications interns. What started as a summer internship extended well into the fall semester, as Gracie and Kyle balanced their class schedules with their work on our team and stayed with us through our third Annual Meeting in September. From content development and events to brand initiatives and plenty of projects in between, they jumped in wherever they were needed, including helping us prepare for and execute our biggest event of the year. Throughout their time with us, Gracie and Kyle brought fresh perspectives, thoughtful ideas and a willingness to take on new challenges. Along the way, they became valued members of our team. We believe strongly in creating opportunities for emerging talent to learn, contribute and build meaningful connections right here in Ohio. We’re grateful Gracie and Kyle chose to spend the past several months as part of our team, and we’re excited to see where their talents take them next. Mark Kvamme liked thisMark Kvamme liked thisFigure was valued at $39 billion before humanoid robots existed at anything close to industrial scale. MiddleGround Capital, a Kentucky-based private equity firm, is building robotic work cells for its portfolio companies because those economics can be measured today. Robotics has two capital markets, and they are pricing different things. One is funding the future: general-purpose humanoids, physical AI and the possibility that machines eventually perform a broad range of human work. The other is financing what already works. MiddleGround has built its own automation team to design robotic work cells. The economics are mundane enough to underwrite: cycle time, throughput, labor savings, safety improvement and payback. A private-equity buyer can put a robotic cell into the operating case because someone can measure what it does to EBITDA. It cannot do the same because a humanoid demo looks extraordinary. MiddleGround says it can now underwrite automation opportunities into deals at the point of investment. KPS Capital Partners has drawn the capital-side line even more plainly in recent reporting: AI may create upside, but it will not put capital at risk today on efficiencies it cannot underwrite. Automation is already in the base case. Much of physical AI is still in the upside case. What humanoids need to cross is a financing threshold. A deployed fleet. Measured productive hours. Known maintenance and downtime. A customer willing to move beyond pilots. Enough operating history that the productivity claim becomes an assumption an investment committee is willing to own. I've sat on both sides of that table, underwriting assumptions and defending them to lenders. That step always takes longer than the technology. When it happens, the same capital underwriting robotic work cells today can begin underwriting physical AI tomorrow. Until then, the robotics companies attracting the most capital and the robots creating the most measurable economic value are not necessarily the same ones. #Robotics #PhysicalAI #PrivateEquity #AdvancedManufacturing #IndustrialAutomation

Fund Report, featuring Bernie Kosar. The proposed designation comes 41 years to the day after Bernie’s first regular-season start for the Cleveland Browns — a fitting recognition for one of the most beloved figures in Cleveland sports history. But Bernie’s story extends far beyond football. From growing up in Youngstown and finding his way home to quarterback the team he loved, to business, bankruptcy, addiction, extraordinary health challenges, and ultimately a life-saving liver transplant, Bernie has spent his life returning to one idea: Somehow, someway, figure out a way. In this vulnerable conversation, Bernie reflects on: •How growing up in Youngstown shaped his fear of failure, resilience, and sense of responsibility • The mindset that helped him go from an improbable quarterback prospect to leading his hometown Cleveland Browns • The difficult lessons of business, bankruptcy, addiction, and starting over • How football prepared him — in ways he never expected — for the fight to stay alive • The perspective and gratitude that have followed his liver transplant and recovery • Why he remains deeply optimistic about Ohio and what can still be built here It’s a conversation about football, but much more so about resilience, vulnerability, reinvention, and what it means to keep going when life does not move in a straight line — and we’re proud to share it in advance of Cleveland’s recognition of Bernie on October 13. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/eFWReD8e 📍 Recorded in Ohio. The Midwest’s economic output ranks among the largest in the world, yet the venture capital deployed here barely reflects that reality. The gap between our economic power and our startup funding is staggering and it’s an opportunity worth seizing. So why do Midwest founders and investors have a harder time raising money? This piece by StartMidwest underscores what we experience on the ground. The issue isn’t a shortage of talent or real‑economy problems to solve, it’s a lack of steady, reliable capital. As a venture investor in Iowa, I see three realities: 1) Access to risk capital lags our innovation output. Iowa continues to sit in the bottom third on capital availability relative to what our builders are creating. 2) Institutional participation is the unlock. When long‑duration capital leans in, the narrative shifts from variable to sustainable. 3) Policy can be a feature, not a bug. Performance‑based incentives that recycle a modest share of value back into Iowa tech can catalyze company formation, scaling, and high‑wage jobs without penalizing growth. 2026 needs to be an inflection point, not another wait‑and‑see year. The potential is here. The founders are here. The industries are here. Now we need sustained investment that matches that potential. Here’s to building a 2026 that reflects the strength of entrepreneurs across our region, especially here in Iowa. #IowaInnovation #IowaVC #MidwestVC #VentureCapital Article: https://lnkd.in/grbJ7Dqn

What’s old is new. Funny to watch VCs flood back to out-of-favor business models—hardware-enabled software, marketplaces, consumer tech—which are now viewed as more defensible because AI can't easily replicate physical infrastructure, network effects, or brand.

The greater DC tech ecosystem is growing faster than many people realize. At K Street Capital, we're tracking 370 active tech companies across DC, Maryland, and Virginia including 178 in Washington, DC alone. Note - To us, A "Tech Company" is a high-growth, venture-backable company (not consulting/gov con/IT shops, unless it makes tech that could be vc backed). A Few Highlights: -227 early-stage companies driving the next wave of innovation -Strength across health tech, cybersecurity, defense, climate, and govtech -A growing presence of AI and analytics startups The DC region has always been home to tech companies flying under the radar (until they're not) but now we're seeing more and more of it, including many companies moving their HQ here. Lastly, this data is based solely on our own knowledge, companies we've been made aware of or interacted with in the recent past (full list here - https://lnkd.in/eje_hQgR). I'm sure there are MANY more. If we missed one, please let us know! #DMVTech #VentureCapital #Startups #WashingtonDC

"So what exactly is a venture studio?" I'm not sure how many times I've had this conversation over the last few years. At least a few times / week. For aspiring venture builder - especially those in institutional settings, 'getting' the model - and understanding how it differs from others - is critical. So, we're starting at the beginning. On March 19, I'm sitting down with Matthew Burris for the first session of the The Venture Studio Forum's University Track Speaker Series. Matt is widely credited for helping to define the venture studio asset class - he co-authored the Venture Studio Index and built the Three-Role Framework that the industry uses to classify studios. He's spent more time researching what makes a studio a studio than anyone I know. If you're at a university, research institution, or economic development org trying to figure out whether a venture studio makes sense for you, this is where to start. Note, this event kicks off a five part-series we're running through the VSF, all focused on helping institutions understand and evaluate the model. Here's the full program: Mar 19: What Is a Venture Studio? Apr 16: University Studio Examples May 21: Funding Mechanisms Jun 18: Finding & Working with Studios Jul 16: Sourcing & Evaluating Founder Talent Registration link in the comments!

The "One Number" That Derails Fundraisers Most founders believe their fundraising fails because of market size, competition, or valuation. In reality, the single most common cause of early deal-kill in 2026 is Net Dollar Retention (NDR) / Cohort Churn misalignment. When institutional VCs run due diligence, they look straight past top-line ARR growth to test the underlying retention health: • High acquisition with high churn is just expensive customer acquisition. • Expansion revenue from existing logos (NDR > 110%+) proves true product-market fit and pricing power. Before going to market, founders must ensure their core operational data room tells a clear, undeniable story about customer retention and payback periods. At G+QUANT we partner with early-stage founders to structure institutional-grade investment decks, data rooms, and capital strategies that withstand rigorous VC due diligence. Founders: Have you stress-tested your retention cohort metrics prior to initiating your next round?
