This week I accidentally walked through a Paul Allen retrospective. A call with a friend at the Allen Institute, where they're mapping brain cells to understand where Alzheimer's actually begins. A stop at AI2 Incubator to connect with Yifan Zhang, who's leading the team catalyzing Seattle's AI ecosystem. Got caught in the Seahawks Super Bowl parade (a million 12s celebrating a team stewarded by Jody Allen) on my way to Ai2 to jam with my friend and "AI to solve the hard stuff" thought partner Chris Emura. Four stops. One name. At the same time, there’s an active conversation about the identity of Seattle tech. As a transplant, it's easy to see this as a company town. Yesler’s mills. Boeing. Weyerhaeuser. Microsoft. Amazon. Starbucks. Each wave built fortunes. Each wave reshaped the city. And each left people asking what we gained and what we lost. What feels different about Allen’s imprint is this: He didn’t just build companies, he built infrastructure: Research institutions that publish openly; Gathering spaces for builders who aren’t yet famous; Connective tissue across sectors that don’t naturally talk to each other. Paul Allen built a scaffold for what comes next. So when people ask where Seattle fits in the AI moment, I think the more interesting question is: Who better to confront the second-order effects of AI than a city that has lived through industrial reinvention multiple times? We know innovation creates wealth. We also know it creates displacement, fragility, and unintended consequences. Seattle's opportunity isn’t to replicate our neighbor in California. It’s to double down on being the home base for founders and institutions making this wave durable and widely beneficial. The future belongs to the cities (and founders) willing to build for the long arc.

White House Launches National Health Data Tracking Ecosystem: Balancing Access and Privacy The White House and CMS have just revealed a sweeping new Health Tech Ecosystem initiative. Backed by 60+ major players from Apple, Google, and Amazon to health systems like UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health, it's aimed at fundamentally redesigning how Americans access and share their health data. Patients who opt in will finally be able to view and control their medical records across providers and apps using secure digital credentials. At its core, this is a win for patient empowerment: - Seamless interoperability: no more faxing or duplicate intake forms. - App ecosystem integration: tools for chronic disease management, digital check-ins, and AI-powered guidance. - Data portability and transparency: patients (not systems) control access. But the glow dims when privacy, security, and trust re-enter the conversation: - Opt-in isn’t enough - how clear is the consent interface? - Are HIPAA gaps being widened if Big Tech joins the mix? - Who governs the audit logs that track “who saw what when”? Product leaders should pay attention: 1. The initiative is a technical inflection point: health data is moving toward consumer-grade ecosystems. 2. If you’re building health systems or apps, interoperability will be table stakes. 3. Secure, privacy-respectful UX isn’t an optional feature; it’s a competitive differentiator. Design for trust-by-design, not just data-sharing. Build privacy guardrails into your architecture, and craft onboarding that doesn’t just “get consent,” but earns it. Reflecting with gratitude on a great week of conversations with students, educators, and parents that has me even more convinced of Vys' mission: 🏛️ Spoke with Tim Bernard's Trust & Safety students at Columbia | SIPA about age-appropriate product design, and the way any one youth safety requirement can produce a variety of unique product and policy approaches that map to each company's individual context. 🦜 Chatted with Anika Collier Navaroli's Journalism students at Columbia University - Graduate School of Journalism about how to write youth-centric content moderation policies, and why current moderation standards may not always reflect the reality of young people's lived experiences of harm. 🎒 Talked with parents and faculty across the NY Interschool member schools, hosted by Trinity School, NYC, about the promises and complexity of AI for today's students, and how we can equip them with tools designed to meet them where they are, at every age. I learned as much as I shared from brilliant co-panelists like Evan Harris, Meghan O'Rourke, and Kashyap Rajesh. I said this last month on Safer Internet Day, but this really feels like the year that all of us are meaningfully engaging in conversations about tradeoffs, complexity, and how to center children and teens at the heart of everything we build. Excited to support and amplify more of this work across the ecosystem in 2026!
