🗣️ “Fintech takes away the power hegemony between incumbent and individual.” That's one of the many takeaways attendees walked away with after Fintech Meetup chairman Sanjib Kalita interviewed Nigel Morris for the keynote in Las Vegas yesterday. During the conversation, he recalled his and Capital One co-founder Rich Fairbank's journey when they pitched their idea for a data-driven credit card to banks in the late 1980s. The Capital One story shows “that from small acorns, giant oak trees grow,” and that's why Morris is a big believer that entrepreneurs can create huge things. Not only is he betting big on entrepreneurs, but specifically entrepreneurs running fintech firms. "Fintech levels the playing field. Fintech empowers consumers of small businesses." Haveli Investments closes debut $4.5bn software buyout fund led by Vista Equity Partners co-founder Brian Sheth. The fund, which closed at its hard cap in March, targets both minority and control stakes in enterprise software businesses. Since its inception, Haveli has pursued an active acquisition strategy. It acquired cybersecurity risk management firm AppViewX, and ZeroFox Holdings, a cybersecurity services provider. The $4.5bn fund signals strong investor appetite for sector-specialist strategies in enterprise software, even as broader fundraising conditions remain mixed across the private equity landscape. FIS’ Michelle Henrich and BNY’s Carl Slabicki chart the shift in bank tech. Henrich recalls the old model: stitching multiple back-ends with mismatched XML/SOAP/REST - slow, brittle, and limiting APIs to must-have use. Slabicki outlines BNY’s platform model: build core capabilities once, centrally own them, and expose via APIs a single source of truth, less duplication, faster delivery. Good update from S&P Global on the current state of BaaS for both banks and fintechs, the regulatory actions in recent years, and where we may be heading. One excerpt: The cascade of regulatory actions issued to BaaS banks helped remind the parties in a bank-fintech partnership that "the fintech is a third-party provider to the bank, and not the other way around," Ransom said.
