Jay Goyal posted thisYesterday, we announced that Alongside has been acquired by TimelyCare. We started Alongside before GPT, with a simple goal: build a chatbot that could help kids navigate wellbeing challenges. As the models improved, our focus shifted to putting clear clinical informed pathways and safety guardrails in place for how the system behaves, especially in higher-risk situations. Our S.U.R.E. framework sets a standard that's rare in AI products today. Over time, we also expanded the platform to support both students and the staff around them, reaching 100k students across 200 schools in 19 states. Students can build 50+ skills to help with day-to-day challenges, and staff can better understand where students need help and what’s working. This foundation piqued the interest of TimelyCare. Luke Hejl and his team have built the leading virtual care platform in higher ed. Together we can support students across the full spectrum of care, from everyday to higher acuity, spanning K-12 and higher ed. I’m incredibly grateful to my cofounders, Anish Mehta and Scott Freschet. They poured everything into building Alongside. The same goes for our team, who worked tirelessly to build and partner with schools on a product they trust and students actually use. And thank you to all our investors. Amy Nam McCullough, Chuck Stonecipher, and the Trilogy Equity Partners team backed us early and never wavered. Grateful for all of you.

Their leadership understands the important of meeting the needs of a diverse range of students and prioritizing making help accessible, comfortable, and engaging for their students. Thanks so much to Dr. Deirdre Natasha Scott, Ed.D, MSW and Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Ed.D, DDiv. for embracing our partnership and launching billboards in Fayetteville, NC to let the community know that help is now accessible 24/7 for their secondary students.

Jay Goyal reposted thisJay Goyal reposted thisSummary of the "The State of the American Student: Fall 2023" 👇 Thanks CPRE & Robin Lake for producing this report, and for highlighting a recommendation to Invest in a national youth intervention strategy that develops, tests, and promotes new interventions (such as strengthening adult-student relationships) and innovative methods (such as AI technology) for struggling adolescents and young adults. --------- 1️⃣ Although they were back in school this year, the kids are still not alright - NAEP math and reading scores for 4th and 8th grade students reached record lows in 2022 - 16 million students were chronically absent 2️⃣ Of the greatest concern are older students who have the least time to catch up - ACT college admission scores are the lowest since 1991 - It will take the average 8th grader 7.4 months to catch up to pre-pandemic levels in reading and 9.1 months in math - 57% of teenage girls in the U.S. felt persistently sad or hopeless, and 30% seriously considered suicide (CDC’s 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey) - Undergraduate enrollment at public universities and community colleges dropped 7% 3️⃣ K-12 responses have been inadequate - Only 2 in 100 students are receiving the kind of high-impact tutoring that makes a difference - 1 in 5 students graded their schools D or F in mental health supports, individualized instruction, and feeling excited about learning 4️⃣ Why we must act now The challenges are likely to get more difficult for at least four reasons. - $200 billion in federal pandemic relief funding will expire in January 2025 - The fiscal cliff will come on top of an already challenging environment for educators, which has worsened since the pandemic, including an uptick in teacher turnover in the 2022-23 school year - Societal changes are ratcheting up the demands on the next generation of students - Most parents and the public are alarmingly unaware of the severity of these challenges, which makes it tougher for policymakers to respond with the necessary boldness. For example, 90% of parents believe their child is performing at grade level or above, despite reams of data to the contrary. https://lnkd.in/gYe5Z7_x Jess Bell, M.Ed.Ken Brown Joshua Ahn Jay Goyal Scott FreschetThe State of the American Student 2023 – Center on Reinventing Public EducationThe State of the American Student 2023 – Center on Reinventing Public Education

Jay Goyal shared thisToday, Alongside made the local news in Indiana! Hearing Jace, a 10th grader, share how our app provides a foundation for mental health that will serve him in his 30s, 40s, and 50s felt absolutely incredible. We started Alongside one year ago, and it's clear we've built an app that can positively impact millions of adolescents. A low cost, 24/7, personalized solution is the only way to make a dent in the youth #mentalhealth crisis (did you know 42% of teens feel persistently sad or hopeless and 22% contemplated suicide in the past year?). With the success we are seeing in our pilot school districts, I'm excited to reach more schools across the country. If you want to be part of the solution to this crisis in your community, please ping me. https://lnkd.in/gZEd3Ycn"I'll be able to deal with my mental health better..." Jay Goyal reacted on thisJay Goyal reacted on thisToday, we shared Etsy’s Q3 results. This has been a transformational year for Etsy, and we’re heading into the holidays with even more conviction in what makes Etsy different: our sellers’ creativity, the craftsmanship and care behind their work, and the human connection that gives those items meaning. That conviction is reflected in our results. Etsy marketplace GMS grew 8.8% year over year, our third consecutive quarter of accelerating year-over-year growth. Active buyers returned to year-over-year growth for the first time in two years, and our active seller base grew at its fastest rate in two years. Our improving performance reflects our progress in delivering a better shopping experience and in making Etsy’s unique value easier for buyers to discover and appreciate, and for sellers to want to be a part of. I’m proud of the progress we've made so far, and very optimistic about the opportunities ahead. Jay Goyal reacted on thisJay Goyal reacted on thisToday is my last day at Alongside, and it closes out a chapter I'm deeply proud of. For almost 5 years, I've had the privilege of co-founding and building a safe space that helps young people improve their wellbeing and mental health. In short, Alongside helps students work through what they're carrying and build skills before small struggles turn into big ones. We set out to build something that actually worked, and we held ourselves to proving it. Independent research found that students using Alongside saw a 25% reduction in anxiety and a 20% reduction in school absences. For a small team, it's hard to overstate what it means to help kids feel better and show up to school more often. I'm so proud of what we built, and prouder that we did it with care for the students, counselors, principals and districts who trusted us. Thank you to Amy Nam McCullough and Chuck Stonecipher at Trilogy Equity Partners for backing this mission when it was just an idea. And thank you to Luke Hejl at TimelyCare for seeing what Alongside could become and for the vision to bring it to more and more young people across the country. Thank you to everyone who helped make Alongside what it is today. This has truly been a team effort. To my co-founders, Jay Goyal and Anish Mehta: thank you for wanting to make the world a better place, and for making it fun to do it together.

Jay Goyal reacted on thisJay Goyal reacted on thisOver the past year I’ve had the good fortune of spending some time away from work, and it’s been some of the most personally rewarding times of my life: more school drop-offs and pick-ups, more practices, more field trips, more spontaneous activities! It also gave me space to think about what I wanted to do next and who I wanted to do it with. For most of my career, I’ve helped build companies that make everyday life a little easier, whether that’s getting a ride, a meal, a job, or accessing care. I’ve seen again and again that the best experiences come from obsessing over the people you’re serving. And the more time I spent with AI over the past year, the more excited I got about what’s now possible in care delivery. So I’m thrilled to share that I’ve joined Doctronic as Chief Operating Officer. We are building AI-native care that’s safe, clinically rigorous, personalized, and accessible. I love the mission, and what sealed it was the people. I left every conversation with this team more energized than when I walked in. Thank you to Adam Z. Oskowitz, Matt Pavelle, Ellen D., Faraz Fatemi, and the whole Doctronic team for welcoming me. And we’re hiring! If you’re excited about AI and healthcare and want to build with a great team, I’d love to hear from you. Send me a message or check out our open roles at https://lnkd.in/gaphe8r8!

Jay Goyal liked thisJay Goyal liked thisEarlier this year, I had open-heart surgery. The chain of events that got me there started when I had Korean barbecue the night before an annual checkup with blood work. When the results came back, my triglycerides were about 10 times normal. I assumed it was a faulty test possibly related to my dinner which was fatty. But I work in healthcare technology and knew enough about incidental findings to ask my provider another question: Should I get a coronary artery calcium scan? Insurance didn’t cover it, so I paid for it myself. That scan started a series of follow-up tests that ultimately found something completely unrelated to my triglycerides. I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, a condition I had lived with my entire life without knowing it. I was surprised because I had never shown any symptoms and I exercised regularly; in fact, I just notched a personal record in a half marathon last year. Yet, due to the bicuspid valve, I had developed an enlarged aorta with severe regurgitation. The diagnosis eventually led to open-heart surgery. I was also extraordinarily fortunate in what happened next. Within roughly two weeks I had completed my tests, heard directly from a cardiologist and had a cardiac surgeon lined up. Many Americans would not have had the same access, knowledge, and resources. That experience has made the questions surrounding early diagnosis, incidental findings, and access to care very personal for me.

Jay Goyal reacted on thisJay Goyal reacted on thisAlmost ten weeks ago I shared here that I'd been laid off from SchoolAI along with a ton of other really talented folks. Today I get to tell you how the story turned out. Here's what the last ten weeks actually looked like. 13 companies. 37 interviews. Somewhere around 30 hours actively interviewing, and at least that much time preparing for them. Made it to final rounds with 4 companies. Two verbal offers along the way. And one final offer that I've happily landed on. I won't sugarcoat it. The market right now is nuts. Interviewing became a full time job of its own. If you're in the thick of it, I see you. It tests your patience and your sense of self in ways that are hard to explain until you're living it, and I'm so thankful to be moving forward again. I met some really incredible people along the way, and I'm so thankful for all the opportunities I was given to connect with folks across a ton of different industries while trying to see where I might find my next adventure waiting. I'm thrilled to say that next week I join Ignite Reading as a Senior Product Manager, and I could not be more excited about the mission and the team. And none of this happened alone. To everyone who put in a word, sent a referral, or gave their own time to help me prep, thank you. You turned a hard, lonely, and stressful stretch into something I could actually get through. I won't forget it. To anyone going through it now, I'm here to offer whatever help I can. But today, I celebrate the start of something new. Per Aspera, Ad Astra 🚀✨

Jay Goyal reacted on thisJay Goyal reacted on thisOur first HealthKart stores in Dubai - a proud and humbling milestone for us! More than expansion, this is about taking a brand built in India to customers around the world. When we started HealthKart 15 years ago, Indian nutrition brands had a trust problem. Counterfeit products and poor quality had damaged consumer confidence, and few believed a 'Made in India' nutrition brand could earn global trust. After spending over a decade rebuilding that trust in India, this is our next step in showing that Indian brands, with an unwavering commitment to quality, can earn consumer trust anywhere in the world. Will this store format work internationally? We don't know yet. The economics still have to prove themselves. But the only way to learn is to take the first step! What gives me optimism is our journey in India. Building a network of over 250 specialty nutrition stores across 110 cities wasn't about following a playbook. The format didn't exist, nor did the term "omnichannel." We had to build the model from first principles, stay disciplined, and scale it profitably. A special thank you to Manish Mangotra, who has led our store journey with patience and conviction, and to the entire HealthKart team for making this possible. Here's to taking the best of India to the world 🇮🇳

I’m taking the summer to reset and think deliberately about what I want to build next. To my fellow folks at corporates: design partnerships aren't charity. They're options. And most large organizations are leaving them on the table. I see a lot of startups in new energy and advanced hardware with real money behind them and technology that's clearly legit, but it's too early to deploy. So the corporate says "come back when you're production-ready" and moves on. I think that's backwards. A design partnership costs a few hours of your team's time. You tell the company where you'd want it to go and what would make you a customer someday. Nothing binding, no procurement process. What you get is a say in the roadmap, a head start on a technology your competitors will want in two years, and a spot as the reference customer if it works. If it doesn't, you lost an afternoon. The companies that figure this out spend attention early, not money. They're first in line when the tech is ready. Everyone who waited for "production-ready" is in a queue behind them. A few hours of your time against a seat at the table for the next decade. That's not a close call.

Many founders believe product management is mainly about building the right features. But at some point every company discovers the real challenge: product sits at the intersection of strategy, sales, engineering, and leadership expectations. A few months ago I read a thoughtful article by Shreyas Doshi called “The Product Builder’s True Journey.” that captures this reality well. The journey of a product builder is not just about learning frameworks. - It's about learning how organizations actually work. The most difficult product problems I’ve seen in scale-ups rarely came from users or technology. They came from misalignment between teams. Worth a read for anyone building or leading product teams.

Steve Jobs' most defining design quote: "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works" In most teams I’ve been part of, the quote never fully translated to reality. Designs often became “half-alive” by the time they shipped. Full design but half code. Excited to see noon.design take a real swing at fixing that. I have been closely watching this from the idea stage to launch — super happy to see this go live 🚀 I’ve known Kushagra Sinha for more than 6 years now. I’ve had the chance to work with him earlier. It’s no surprise he’s going after something this fundamental and one thing that stands out is how deeply he cares about the craft of building products. And knowing Shreyas Arunkumar, I can only imagine the level of execution that’s gone into making this real. The design → code gap has always felt “half-alive” in real-world products. The quote feels real now. I can see it coming through life with noon.design Big day for you guys—congrats! 🙌 🥳

What if I told you that the real reason we built WedZat had nothing to do with features? In the whirlwind of startup culture, it’s easy to get swept up in the chase for the next big thing. But at WedZat, we realized that true value lies in understanding our users and their needs. When we set out to create our platform, we focused on more than just functionality. We listened closely to our community, gathering feedback and insights that shaped our vision. One of our key takeaways? Flexibility is essential. The market shifts quickly, and we needed to adapt just as fast. This meant prioritizing decision-making processes that allowed us to pivot when necessary, rather than getting bogged down in endless debates. Take the example of a small wedding planner we worked with. They shared their struggles with managing multiple clients and timelines. By integrating their feedback, we developed features that simplified their workflow, making their lives easier and their businesses more successful. At the end of the day, it’s about building relationships and creating solutions that resonate. So, what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from listening to your customers? #StartupLife #CustomerFeedback #Entrepreneurship #WedZat #Innovation

I led a 100+ member team. Your first 12 hires decide your next 120. When we started AglaSem, we stayed small by design. For almost a year, we were around 10–12 people. Each person was carefully selected because I knew these were the people who would define how the company operated at scale. Here is exactly what I did. 1. Screened profiles myself. I personally went through CVs in detail. When I called someone, it was after serious evaluation. 2. Used the first call to assess clarity. I asked basic questions and listened closely to how clearly they explained their work. I wanted people who could understand instructions quickly and respond precisely. (🌟 This step with one quick 5-minute call, pre-defined questions, saves you 2 hour per candidate who - even if they pass all tests - would fail when they actually join. ) 3. Defined week-one expectations before the interview. Bootstrapped profitable startups such as ours don't have the luxury of 6-months training and then action timelines. Everyone had to contribute early. Before interviewing, I was clear about what I expected from that role in the first week. During the interview, I tested for ownership of those exact responsibilities. 4. Conducted every final interview and closed decisions fast. I personally interviewed each candidate. Once the final evaluation was done, I almost alwats discussed it with my co-founder, and communicated decisions to the candidate quickly. 🌟Till date, I have interviewed over 850 people (maybe that's why I still love interviewing people, whether it be for hiring or podcasts!).🌟 As we grew from 12 to 50 and eventually to 120, I stayed closely involved in hiring. ========= But why is this so important at least for the first 12 hires? The first 12 hires set the standard for performance, ownership, and quality. Every new team member observed them. They learned how work was done. They absorbed what was considered acceptable. That early standard shaped the next 120 more than any policy document ever could. ========= In your #startup, are you or any of the co-founders closely involved in the hiring process? What have you learnt so far? 🌟I love helping out a fellow leader. If you are scaling, and need any guidance on hiring decisions, DM me. 🌟

What does a “fractional co-founder” actually mean? For Kalyani Ravi, it’s intentionally different from being a consultant, COO, or Chief of Staff. She’s stepping into the company as a senior operator and thought partner, helping shape the vision alongside the founder, not just execute someone else’s. But the interesting part is what that actually looks like day to day. We sat down with Kalyani in our latest behind the scenes interview with fractionals to dig into the role, why she chose the title, and what founders and operators should think about before jumping into a fractional relationship.
