Doug Scott reposted thisDoug Scott reposted thisSimplePractice CEO Jonathan Seltzer appeared on Heard's podcast, "The Money Part" this week to talk about AI in mental healthcare, the ins and outs of accepting insurance, and what it means to be an independent clinician. Links to listen and watch in the comments.

Doug Scott shared thisJonathan Seltzer touches on the most important topics facing clinicians and mental health today in this great article from Second Opinion Media. He makes a strong and principled case for the importance of empowering independent clinicians in mental healthcare, as opposed to replacing them or disintermediating them. If we can work towards this vision, the world will be better for it! https://lnkd.in/g63gCBeG

Doug Scott shared thisIt’s hard enough to be an independent clinician without having to navigate this complexity. It’s one of the reasons SimplePractice launched Insurance Navigator and included Insurance Specialists as part of it. We all need someone to help us make sense of this!Doug Scott shared thisI’ve finally gathered data that definitively quantifies one of the tricks insurance plays, and everyone who works in healthcare needs to pay attention. Right now, insurers are allowed to change their coverage requirements without notifying physician groups, constantly moving the goal posts so physicians can’t keep up and insurers can delay and deny more care. After seeing the actual numbers, it is no wonder insurance has absolute control over this industry. I deployed a swarm of agents across just 4 specialties (oncology, spine and pain, cardiology, and sleep medicine) for the largest insurers, including Aetna, BCBS groups, Centene, Cigna, and United. The question I wanted to answer was: How often over the past 3 years has insurance changed the rules? For these 4 specialties, I found each payer policy and looked at how often the overall documents changed, and how many individual rule changes were hidden in those documents. In just 4 specialties across 9 different insurers / utilization managers, the payer policies governing medical necessity criteria alone were changed 262 times, with 1,841 individual criteria changed. And the worst part is how opaque the entire process is. Every change is buried in a thick PDF in an obscure corner of the website. For example, United’s radiology manual alone is 3,513 pages long. Right now, the first time physicians are learning about these policy changes are when they are receiving a delay or denial for a patient. A patient who might be in debilitating pain, suffering for every second they are not receiving treatment. This is not how healthcare is supposed to work. I did the same thing for E/M (office visit) coding, which is supposed to be a simple system that is standard across insurers, with only 9 CPT codes in the core family. However, across just 8 insurers over the last 3 years, there were 38 changes to the payment documentation, eligibility, and claim review rules required to get paid. To no surprise, Aetna and United led the way with 9 and 8 changes respectively. How is anybody supposed to keep up? Looking at the numbers, this power to change the rules as often as they want, at a moment’s notice and with no notification, is part of the reason physicians are permanently at a disadvantage. It is not reasonable to expect a clinic or hospital to constantly keep up with these rule updates. It isn’t even possible to deploy the manpower to track nearly 2,000 changes in just 4 specialties over the past 3 years. If this continues, care and payments will only be delayed and denied further. Clinics will close, and patients will go unserved. I think it is time for the healthcare industry to fight back. I’ve recently been working with different groups and have built tools to stay on top of the constantly shifting landscape. If this is something you’re interested in talking more about, please reach out, something needs to be done.

Doug Scott shared thisWell said Hannah Weisman, PhD! I love these livestreams.Doug Scott shared thisIt’s a fascinating experience to go from using a product to working for the company that makes it. Since joining SimplePractice I’ve found out so many things that I either didn’t know or didn’t pay much attention to before. One of those is our monthly livestreams where customers can ask our CEO Jonathan Seltzer questions directly. I had seen these sessions advertised, but I didn’t really understand why I would join. Well let me tell you: if you have questions, feature requests, ideas, or feedback, you bet it helps to surface it directly to the CEO. As an example, a clinician asked during last month’s livestream if they would need to pay for an insurance benefit eligibility check if it came back as “unknown.” Jonathan committed on the call that they shouldn’t have to and followed up immediately with the product team to confirm. I’m also sharing a clip below from a recent livestream that gives you a sense of the Q&A vibe. It’s very informal; the vast majority of time is spent with Jonathan responding directly to clinician comments and questions. At the end of every livestream, Jonathan invites clinicians to reach out to him directly via email– and many do! And he responds! I’m genuinely blown away by how connected he remains to customers. That’s hard to do as a CEO, even if most CEOs would tell you it’s important. All that to say, if you are a SimplePractice customer, consider joining Let’s Talk with Jonathan this Friday at 11 AM PT / 12:00 PM MT / 1:00 PM CT / 2:00 PM ET. You can submit questions when you register, ask them live, or just sit back and listen to what's top of mind for clinicians and for the leader of a company providing software to 250,000+ mental health clinicians. If this Friday doesn't work, mark your calendar for November 20th and December 18th (same time). Link to register in comments below. ✍️ Post written by me, without Claude (yay!) but with a human colleague reviewing to make sure I got all the deets right. Thank you Janel!

Doug Scott shared thisWorking at SimplePractice, there is nothing more gratifying than getting to spend time with, and hear from, clinicians. And one of the most common things I hear is how much their peer relationships and connections mean to them. I love that the Kaleidoscope Meetup program is going to be able to help make that happen more often, for more clinicians. If you are a clinician organizing your local crew for networking, learning together, or just to chill, let us know, we love to help make it happen!Doug Scott shared thisA group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope. Each moves independently, but together, they become something bigger. This World Mental Health Day, SimplePractice is launching the Kaleidoscope Meetup Fund. Practitioners can apply for a grant of up to $1,000 to host meaningful, in-person gatherings in their local communities. Find your people. Create space to connect. Build the kind of community independent practice needs. Because independent doesn’t have to mean alone. Learn more and apply at the link in the comments.

Doug Scott shared thisCare Aide is here and I'm so proud of it. It represents the work of so many people that brought it to life. Engineers, designers, product leaders, marketers, support, legal, finance and so many more have all helped shape this moment. But the most important drivers of Care Aide, by far, are the clinicians using SimplePractice. This is both from and for them. We believe that it is critical to provide all clinicians with the tools to practice in the way that they want. Clinicians are the ones who best know how to drive the best outcomes for their clients and we want to support them in that task always. When it comes to mental health, too often it can seem like only the big health systems can afford to buy/build advanced tech. We think that independent clinicians should have the same (or better!) quality tools than the big guys so that they can build their practices and deliver great care in the way that only they can. (Independent practitioners are the best!) This is where Care Aide comes in. We developed this suite of AI tools to support independent clinicians as they navigate the process of delivering care. Everything from intake to treatment plans to session prep to in session support to notes to client-facing summaries. It's pretty comprehensive. We built Care Aide with the input of over 1000 independent clinicians along the way. So that it works the way they want it to and supports them in they ways that they want. Talking to them about the ways they provide care and how that could be supported by tech, having them bang away on concepts and prototypes, and then asking them about their experience with it during early access. All of this went into the product that is Care Aide today. The thousands of clinicians that have used it leading up to the launch have told us that they have found it really helpful (and that it helped save them hours each week that would have otherwise been spent, probably on nights and weekends, on admin work). So, ultimately, it's from and for clinicians. I hope it's clear by now that we always want the clinician fully in charge and these tools are designed in that way. If they don't work for them, then they don't work, period. Ultimately, we hope these tools are helpful to clinicians on SimplePractice. And if they could be better, let us know! We will never stop working to support independent mental health practitioners in every way possible. Thank you for all that you do!Doug Scott shared thisMeet Care Aide, a suite of AI-powered tools built to take on the heavy lifting of your back office, giving you back the headspace to focus on the work that matters. Doug Scott liked thisDoug Scott liked thisSimplePractice and Heard recently published the 2026 Clinician Wellbeing Study of more than 800 therapists. I’ll put the link to the study in the comments. A few takeaways. 42% of therapists report feeling burned out, up from 29% in 2023. That’s a lot. Therapists rank marketing and finding new clients as the most stressful practice task (48%), more than taxes (42%) and notes (38%). Hopefully my newsletter has helped you feel less stressed about marketing. 80% say software tools free up more time for client care and make it more sustainable to stay in the profession, which is encouraging. If your EHR isn’t saving you time, consider switching to SimplePractice. On average, therapists who use SimplePractice’s Note Taker and Care Aide can save up to 9 hours per week. Why does moving rights, metadata and money through the music business still take so much manual work? We digitized distribution. We multiplied the ways a song can earn. The plumbing underneath never caught up. A writer share still gets re-keyed four times between a split sheet and a statement, and somewhere in those four handoffs the money gets stuck. So the AI opportunity I care about in music is not generating more music. It's agents that do the reconciliation work: match a registration against what the society actually has on file, flag the conflict, fix what can be fixed and hand the rest to a person with the context already assembled. We've been building this into OpenPlay through Verse, Pulse and Connect. What I'm more interested in is the next step, when agents at a publisher, a label, a distributor and a society can talk to each other instead of waiting on an email thread. I wrote up where I think it goes for Hypebot: https://lnkd.in/gCtCzeHX The music economy should move at the speed of the music. Agents are how we get there. #MusicTech #AgenticAI #MusicIndustry #OpenPlay

I've received a few pings on this - so wanted to share overall notes. California just signed SB 1050, and if you're producing AI-generated advertising, here's what you need to know. Starting January 1, 2027, ads prominently featuring realistic synthetic human performers will require disclosure. Here's the producer's checklist: ✅ WHAT'S COVERED? TV commercials, streaming, digital advertising, social media ads, and audio advertising. Organic social content can also qualify if it's intended to drive purchases. ✅ WHAT TRIGGERS DISCLOSURE? A realistic synthetic performer who: • Demonstrates or illustrates a product or service in the foreground. • Delivers the commercial message or voiceover. • Illustrates or reacts to the commercial message. ✅ WHAT ABOUT DIGITAL DOUBLES? A recognizable digital double of a real actor is not considered a synthetic performer under this specific law. But talent consent, likeness rights, and contractual obligations still apply. ✅ WHAT DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY REQUIRE DISCLOSURE? AI-generated environments, product shots, and background elements. Certain entertainment promotions and AI used solely for translation or accessibility are also exempt. ✅ WHAT DOES DISCLOSURE LOOK LIKE? Clear and conspicuous language, such as: "This performance features a synthetic performer." ✅ WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON'T COMPLY? Violations fall under California's false advertising and unfair competition laws. Once served with a qualifying court order, advertising platforms must stop distributing the noncompliant ad in California. The takeaway for producers? This isn't a ban on AI-generated advertising. It's a disclosure requirement, and one more reason to address casting, rights, compliance, and deliverables at the beginning of a production. As our industry continues to evolve, understanding these distinctions is going to be increasingly important for agencies, brands, and production partners alike.
